John Raese Surging in West Virginia

According to a new Rasmussen poll, conservaitve Republican John Raese has pulled within 6 points of Democrat Governor Joe Manchin in West Virginia. Manchin now leads Raese 48%-42%, sharply lower than his 51%-35% lead just one month ago.

Also, this poll provides us with even better news. Obama has a 70% disapproval rating in the Mountain State! This is very significant because Manchin is trying to sell himself as a conservative Democrats in order to pander to his constituents. In a normal year, Manchin would probably be successful. (See our article on the successful dog and pony show of the blue dogs here.) However, this poll provides us with more solid evidence that the dog and pony show is over. Obama, with his 70% disapproval rating in WV, will make it all but impossible for Manchin to run as a Democrat, while successfully feigning to be culturally conservative.

A comment about this, from the late Senator Byrd: “Barbaric!”

Maybe this is why Manchin's getting more and more unpopular:

Ps. That’s WV’s unemployment, not USA’s.

West Virginia is one of the most Conservative and anti-Obama states in the Union. They should know that a vote for Manchin will be a vote for Obama. And thankfully it looks like the good folks there are starting to realize this.

I’ll believe it when I see it but if there’s any state that will turn the DC pollsters on their backs, it would be West by-God Virginia.

Mountaineers are always Free.

Manchin has not been all that bad as governor, IMO. I can see Mountaineers not being too fond of losing him to the Senate. Should Raese win, he would be the ONLY Republican to hold a state-wide office in WV.

I think Raese should run some ads saying, “Yeah Joe is a great governor, but in the Senate he would only be the most junior vote for Obama’s agenda - cap and tax, Obamacare, amnesty. Let’s keep him here as governor, where he has done such a great job!”

I think trying to tear down Manchin personally would backfire, especially since he is so popular. The best play would be to point out that he would not be in charge in the Senate, and so he would not be able to accomplish anything other than support an agenda the voters hate.

I sure hope the dem goes down, but I know nothing about Raese. Is there much if any Rino stench on him?

None at all. He has a very conservative bio he has just never gained traction since 1984, but this year is different.

As a resident of WV, I sure hope this is right. I met Raese about a month ago at a co fair. He seems like a pretty conservative guy. As a couple of other listers said, Manchin is conservative for a dem. He has tussled with the teacher's union here and has tried to lower business taxes. (Before anyone says anything I know that he is not a real conservative! just relatively conservative for a dem here) Republicans have won statewide here, but they usually must be very popular personally, as Arch Moore was before he went to jail, or the dems must Benz in disarray, like what took place before our last GOP Governor won. I personally don't think Raese will win. He has tried several times but has never gotten really close. He has the advantage of having a lot of money. He will need it!

The economy is bad here, worse that most of the country, and Obama wasn't popular here to start with. So everything might come together for the perfect storm that lifts Raese over the top. But he is certainly not a favorite yet here!

Don’t know about Raese personally. But... Republicans in WV are kind of like Republicans in California. They are their own breed.
