My father, William Albert Baker II, passed away this morning at the age of 84. He gave me many things in life; the greatest gift was being the instrument by which my Christian faith was quickened. He was born August 9, 1927, and was raised in Washington, D.C., the son of a Washington Post pressman, William Albert Baker.
He was too young to have served in World War II, but was drafted and served in the Army as a bugler, a cook, and a POW guard, having a career more akin to military comedies than drama. He rose from private to sergeant back to private after slugging a second lieutenant. His company commander said that the looie deserved it, but discipline had to be maintained. As a kid, we used to love his "Army Stew" he would make for us.
Note: If it hadn't been for the A-bomb, my dad would have been cannon fodder on the beaches of Honshu.
He went to George Washington University, obtained a degree in accounting, and married my mom. I am the fourth of five children. He served as an accountant with the Federal Power Commission and then the Department of Energy and then in private practice.
He remarried and had a long, happy second marriage to Anne, serving as stepfather to James. He was brave enough to wear his Redskins colors in Texas Stadium.
I miss him very much, but I know Christ has already said, "Well done, my good and f...aithful servant. Enter into the joy of my kingdom."
"Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all of my days; and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever."
So sorry. May God bless you and his family.
I am so sorry. May he rest in peace and be with God.
