Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory..how the WH is totally blowing the Bin Laden event
one man's opinion...

Posted on 05/03/2011 12:28:40 PM PDT by ken5050

I turned FOX on at 2PM..caught the WH press briefing, and then the first few minutes of Shep Smith's program. The presser was a disaster. Unmitigated. Here's a fearless predicition..within one or two more news cycles, we will hear that the SEALS killed an unarmed Bin Laden who was trying to surrender. Several journalists tiptoed around the question, and Shep actually "wondered" aloud how an "old man" could have resisted SEALS. And as I type, he actually asked if this operation was "illegal."

No doubt about it; the world's better off with OBL as fish food.

However, there's lots for people to care about here. There was an assassination (let's not pretend otherwise). It occurred within the borders of a sovereign nation. What are the ground rules here?

The week after 9/11, Congress pass the following law, Authorization for Use of Military Force September 18, 2001 -- Public Law 107-40 [S. J. RES. 23]:
That the President is authorized to use all necessary and appropriate force against those nations, organizations, or persons he determines planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, or harbored such organizations or persons, in order to prevent any future acts of international terrorism against the United States by such nations, organizations or persons.
Osama's status falls under the jurisdiction of the above law. He is a declared enemy of the US, and was treated as a combatant.

As usual, the SEALs show a helluva lot more competence than the politicians.

Like something straight out of a Tom Clancy novel, the President, Vice President, Secretary of State, and other high level staff watched the raid live on television:

Now, if they watched it live, you know it was also recorded. When will those tapes be released?

Well, if Bush was President, the political left and their supporters would care if it was an unlawful killing. Since conservatives just wanted OBL dead, and since Dems and their suupporters always back their own regardless of action taken, Judge Nap is going to stick out like a sore thumb.

It was an illegal operation.

There is no way that its legal, under Pakistani law, for American troops to enter their country without a visa and shoot some old unarmed douchebag right in the face.

Now its up to the Pakistani police to arrest somebody.

Rather than drop a moab on the compound and then dig out bones or teeth for DNA confirmation he goes for the one way he can take credit.

It wasn't for Osama that we sent in the SEALs. We sent them in to secure all the data, hard drives, flash drives, paper docs, etc that could be found in the compound.

A lot of people in the Muslim world are very nervous right now.

“If Holder/Obama went after a SEAL who shot OBL”

You know, it’s just never a good idea to go after people whose friends excel at killing people in their sleep in heavily guarded mansions.

OBL would have had time to prepare, to put on a suicide bomb vest.

Well, needless to say, I hope you’re right.

I’ll be having dinner with my ultra-lib inlaws in a few days. I’m curious to see what they make of all this.

Yes, an old man can resist even a Navy SEAL; all he has to do is reach for a firearm. How well can he do that? Even before the news, my answer would have been "not very well", and the report is that OBL proved my answer to be right.

There is nothing unlawful in that, except for the detail of our military invading a sovereign "allied" country. I don't think anyone wants to fuss about that. We should allow the Pakistani government to save face and pretend they didn't know OBL was hiding in the same neighborhood as half their senior officers, and they should allow us to save face and ignore the detail that we invaded them. At least in public, we forgive them for their error, and they forgive us for our rudeness.

Of course, he’ll just blame Panetta in the end

That trial balloon is already being floated - probably in case this starts to bite them. have seen multiple stories now about Obama 'stalling' or 'hemming and hawing' before making his decision along with a couple intimating that Panetta may have decided to order the strike after waiting for Obama to make a decision.

Of course that could also be being floated to make Panetta look strong and decisive to furthur pave his way to SecDef.

It’s not the actions of our heroes that gets worse, it’s the telling that changes every five minutes that makes the situation worse. Lies and misrepresentations do no one any good.

The thread got pulled, but an article stating that Panetta was actually the one who issued the kill order was up.

If this is true, Obama is probably looking for a way to not make himself seem ineffective. Best way to do that is throw the SEALs under the bus and make it seem like a rogue mission by a band of vigilante troops, that went without his approval.

Islamic special forces dropping into Camp David for a retaliatory strike?
