Who Won the Republican Debate
Elephant Watcher ^ | May 5, 2011

"So who won the debate? In a political debate, of course, there is no such thing as "winning the argument." Instead, candidates aim to achieve certain goals. In this case--even for Pawlenty--the goal was to attract media attention. The debates also present an opportunity for the candidates to prove their rhetorical ability. So who succeeded?

No candidate performed in an outstanding way. Two candidates, Santorum and Johnson, performed poorly. But Cain, Paul, and Pawlenty each achieved what they set out to do...."

I disagree about Cain’s answer on Iraq and Afghanistan. After all, we have a President now who said very clearly what he would do as a candidate and guess what — he’s done JUST THE OPPOSITE on every single foreign policy issue.

Clearly Cain will be a domestic policy candidate and would pick a VP or other advisors for foreign policy. But he loves American and won’t apologize and won’t prosecute CIA investigators.

Herman Cain has no public service experience.

He needs to be a Governor, or at least a Senator.

He didn't even win the GOP primary of a Senate race in GA.

John Cox ran in 2008 and no one supported him. He too was a businessman.

So why is everyone jumping all over Cain?

(Answer: He's black, and the affirmative-action wing of conservatism are foolishly putting race ahead of experience).

He is also too old and is not photogenic.

FReepers ought to be ashamed of themselves. Now's not the time to support these vanity candidates who view the Presidency as the equivalent of tackling Mt. Everest. These are serious times and they demand a serious, qualified leader who has experience and has withstood the onslaught of left-wing Obama thug tactics.

If Cain gets the nomination we're screwed.

Cain came to town with a Big Iron on His Hip.

He snatched the pebble everytime. Truly a master.

Santorum did surprise me though.

Cain came in 1st and then TPaw. I am a big Cain fan and voted for him in 2004. Too bad he lost and we have been saddled with RINO Isakson ever since.

Santorum is pretty bland and many back Gary Johnson primarily because he wants to legalize pot.

Why’d you bring up the color of Cain’s skin?

What does that have to do with anything?

I would vote for anyone that participated in that debate except for Ron Paul. But Ron Paul won it. He electrified the audience. If he gets the nomination, we’re in big trouble.

That isn't hard to do when an army of paulbots follow him around cheering everything he has to say.

Ron Paul will never, ever win the Republican nomination. It simply is not going to happen. The Republican party is a conservative party, not a libertarian party.

As to the winner, I would agree with many others that Cain seemed the strongest (and got better as the debate went along). Still, this debate really looked like the 2nd and 3rd tier brigade. Someone like Palin would easily demolish this group in the primaries should she chose to enter the race (and I hope she does, we need her).

We generally don’t discuss them as their blood is full of homoglobin.

"I sort of like Gary Johnson - but who knows. They all sounded ok to me."

Uhhhhh .. Wasn't Johnson the one kissing the a$$e$ of the 'Undocumented Workers' and wanting to give them a Green Card so they could work 'Legally' in the US?

The guy came off as a bigger RINO/Demon-crat than even Juan McCain!

Ask us Pennsylvanians about that forked tongue! Check his record before you believe everything he says. There is a reason he lost his last election in PA.

Sorry, I should have started with the comment to which I was replying.

Black, Pink, Tan, Brown, Yellow, White. It doesn’t matter about the wrapper. WHO lives inside? That is what matters.

Character!

I like Cain; not so sure how strong he would be on national security. I have a sense he would be good on that.

Why’d you bring up the color of Cain’s skin?

Because that's why the majority of FReepers support him even though he has ZERO public service experience. Nobody supported John Cox in 2008. He was a conservative businessman from IL. I wonder why?

The race obsessed and guilt ridden refer to Thomas Sowell as “Dr.” Thomas Sowell, as a form personal reparations for the sins of their ancestors, but most certainly not mine.

Guess it depends on what you mean by "won".

If I had to vote today, my choice would be Ron Paul. About time we had a candidate that is actually serious about reducing government to its Constitutional constraints. I think he'd use up a case of veto pens in his first year in office.

Second choice would be Herman Cain.

As to the others, wake me up when it's over. More of the same that got us where we are.

Actually I'm for Ron Paul even with all his blemishes..
BUT......... RON PAUL LOST the debate....

And for me they ALL LOST.. the arguments have merely been engaged.

Cain won, Paul is too old (though has aged very well for an 80-year old) and Santorum and Johnson imho are unpresidential. I think Pawlenty is a danger to Obama if he gets through the nomination process.

Palin 2012.
