I'm not prone to conspiracy theories, but it seems as though we seeing the beginnings of a concerted effort by the GOP establishment to eliminate Mitt Romney from the GOP field?
The Wall Street Journal published a scathing piece about Romney titled Obama's Running Mate and followed it up with and article called Romney's Daredevil Act. Scathing is an understatement. By any measure, these were full, frontal assaults on Mitt Romney with only one purpose: derail his 2012 candidacy before it gets started.
National Review Online (which endorsed Romney last time around) published an article by the Editors titled Power Point Failure that was every bit as damning to Romney as the WSJ articles. They have also been an outlet for a number of anti-Romney editorials, including the recent op-ed by Mark Steyn titled Romney's Fix.
The Wall Street Journal and The National Review tend to be GOP insider publications. Meaning they have better access to the party's power brokers, and be friendly to the ideas and positions coming from inside the GOP establishment. By any measure Mitt Romneythe presumptive favorite of the GOP establishment and power brokersshould have publications like the WSJ and NRO in his corner, and we should be seeing articles that are somewhat friendly towards Romney. But we're not.
Instead, we're seeing these publications attack Romney with a force that is unprecedented (for a GOP candidate anyway). This implies a larger question: has the GOP party establishment (the national office holders and party insiders) made a decision about Romneythat they can't win with him in 2012 (not just the presidency, but the down-ticket races as well), and they need to get him out of the way now? It's certainly starting to look that way.
ROFL that’s true.
In fact my most recent FReepathon donation - was during a moment of concern I may have said something nice about Mitt.
:) I love FR.

Sorry, you lost me there.
Clearly the post was confusing Mitt with Obama.
Understandable...
soooo the people who vote in Republican primaries will not vote for the ‘Architect of Obamacare’????
who’d a thunk it?
Now this will make some FREEPERS heads explode. I’ve been seeing for months that the GOP establishment and the NRO and WSJ are “pushing Mitt down our throats”
I heard Romney was in negotiations with Obama to replace Biden on the 2012 ticket.
I'm with you. Either conservatives are having a greater influence; OR, the GOP Establishment has something up their sleeve to nominate somebody even worse than Romney.
Besides, the article cites an Op-ed by Mark Steyn. Mark Steyn is a true conservative -- he's the opposite of the GOP Establishment.
The Palmetto Scoop reported: "One of the first stories to hit the national airwaves was
the claim of a major internal strife between close McCain aides and the folks handling his running mate Sarah Palin."
"Im told by very good sources that this was indeed the case and that a rift had developed, but it was between Palins people and the staffers brought on from the failed presidential campaign of former Gov. Mitt Romney, not McCain aides."
"The sources said nearly 80 percent of Romneys former staff was absorbed by McCain and these individuals were responsible for what amounts to a premeditated, last-minute sabotage of Palin."
aides loyal to Romney inside the McCain campaign, said The Scoop, reportedly saw
that Palin would be a serious contender for the Republican nomination in 2012 or 2016, which made her a threat to another presidential quest by Romney.
"These staffers are now out trying to finish her off .hoping it would ingratiate themselves with Mitt Romney."
"Peeking Out From the McCain Wreckage: Mitt Romney"
"Someone's got to say it: IS MITT ROMNEY RESPONSIBLE FOR OBAMA'S VICTORY?"
"Vanity: Team Romney Sabotaged Palin and Continuing to Do So?"
"Romney Supporters Trashing Palin"
"Romney advisors sniping at Palin?"
That has been what was going on for months. But now we're seeing just the opposite: the WSJ and NRO have done a 180; now they are cutting the legs out from under Romney. Why?
Circulation I would guess.
Unlike the MSM, Fox pays attention to middle America.
It seems to me that if we do not nominate the person MOST hated by the main stream media, we have been suckered...
Wonder wonder that would be?
I’m not so convinced they’ve been pushing Mitt down our throats for months, though some of their writers no doubt find him an attractive candidate. They also are eaten up with conventional wisdom groupthink.
Now, as for the 180 — my guess is they’ve figured out that he is a no go and that Romney Care - and his awful defense of it - is the final nail in his coffin for a lot of folks. You just can’t run an election against Obama Care (and that will be the key issue) if you’ve instituted Romney Care.
Mitt cut his own throat this week.
He boldly pled guilty as charged this week.
Nominating the person most hated by the MSM is a good strategy. Since August of 2008 that has been Palin, which I assume is your point. I could live with that.
I’m sure they are just starting to really hate Herman Cain. Give them some time with him, and they’ll grow to hate him. They also hate Bachmann. What I love today is that they have to mourn the loss of the Huckster from the list.

Mitt could have fixed his problem if he had said that Romneycare seemed right at the time, but analysis of its operations where the inability to cut costs and the extended wait to see a physician, all indicate a failed idea. He could take the lead and turn the issue on Obama as a national debate if he were to wise up on this concept.
But Mitt also has to articulate his core principles that he has governed by and that would be an even bigger problem. Seeya Mitt. Wouldn’t want to be ya!
