There are very, very few politicians, if any at all, that don’t disappoint us in one way or another. We’re talking about human beings and none are perfect.

I wasn’t aware Bachmann was a prominent Minnesota politician and Chairman of the state party as well as for his campaign at the time she voted for Carter.

Nitpicking. She was a diehard dem and diehard Carter supporter, according to your reasoning, that makes her a RINO regardless of what she did afterward.

If I had a dime for everytime I heard that line... it’s merely just an excuse to lower the bar. But then you know that. You also know that lowering that bar got us into the national predicament we find ourselves in. It’s time to jack that bar up and then some. That’s why I’m not looking for a politician for President, but for a leader. An enormous difference.

Yeah, I thought the same thing, but his analysis, or essay, has some interesting points. The excerpt is just the first paragraph, it’s a fairly lengthy piece.

No, sir, it’s not nitpicking. There’s a great deal of difference between being an average citizen (and young at that, early 20s) vs. a prominent elected official and state party chairman endorsing and supporting a candidate. If you can’t discern the difference, that speaks to your credibility on the subject at hand.

Its nitpicking, especially considering Perry has a 10 record as governor to look at afterward. It is THAT record we should be looking at to evaluate him as a candidate, not what he did 30 plus years ago. But, each of us has our own method of choosing I guess.

Thanks for the late night battle, it was fun. Good night.

There’s a great deal of difference between being an average citizen (and young at that, early 20s) vs. a prominent elected official and state party chairman endorsing and supporting a candidate.

There's some difference, though not a great deal, after 22 years. The real question is this: Do people change? If they do change, then what they may have felt over two decades ago is not a problem. If they don't change, then it's a major problem.

The reason this issue isn't really gaining any traction is that 1988 may as well have been in the Bronze Age, as far as most people care today. People turning liberal as they grow older might be cause for some raised eyebrows. People turning more conservative is just a sign of a well adjusted brain.

I guess the thing that I don’t understand is that you rule out any candidate that has one strike against them.

I look at the entirety of his record, that’s why he’s so objectionable. Again, you’re the one that wants to equate a 20-year old college student with a nearly 40-year old Democrat State Chairman. Big difference between growing up vs. rank opportunism.

I submit Perry’s “change” was due to sheer opportunism. He saw his rise in the Democrat party at a standstill and used the GOP as a vehicle instead (all the while his ideology was scarcely different, from “moderate” Democrat to establishment RINO — from Gore to Giuliani). I note the other poster tried to equate Bachmann’s political judgment at the age of 20 vs. that of a well-established political figure nearly 40. The absurdity of showing equality between the two went off the charts.

Yeah... what do you mean “one” strike ? He passed the threshold of three strikes a long time ago. He should’ve retired as the mediocre RINO Governor that he is 5 years ago. Might’ve had a real Conservative in office today like Michael Williams... someone who would be a natural opponent for Zero. Instead Texas gets stuck with this office-hog who wanted to set the record for longevity as Governor.

If you're thinking of supporting Rick Perry for the GOP nomination I recommend that you read the whole thing.

If you're thinking of supporting Rick Perry for the GOP nomination I recommend that you read this.

"I think there is a path to citizenship for those young men and women ILLEGAL ALIENS who have served their country," Perry said.

THEIR COUNTRY?! Perry thinks America is THEIR COUNTRY?!
Perry wants to give ILLEGAL aliens citizenship

In 2001, Perry signed into law the very first Texas “Dream ACT.” It allowed the children of illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition at any Texas university. Perry defended the Texas “Dream ACT,” saying, “To punish these young Texans for their parents' actions is not what America has always been about.”

Perry then jetted off to Mexico and bragged to the Mexicans that Texas passed this law, saying, “The message is simple, educacion es el futuro, y si se puede.” Education is the future, and yes we can.
Rick Perry’s immigration problem

In February 2007, Perry signed a shocking executive order forcing every sixth-grade girl to submit to a three-jab regimen of the Gardasil vaccine. He also forced state health officials to make the vaccine available "free" to girls ages 9 to 18. The drug, promoted by manufacturer Merck as an effective shield against the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus (HPV) and genital warts, as well as cervical cancer, had only been approved by the Food and Drug Administration eight months prior to Perry's edict.

Perry defenders pointed to a bogus "opt-out" provision in his mandate "to protect the right of parents to be the final authority on their children's health care." But requiring parents to seek the government's permission to keep an untested drug out of their kids' veins is a plain usurpation of their authority. Translation: Ask your bureaucratic overlord to determine if a Gardasil waiver is right for you.

Libertarians and social conservatives alike slammed Perry's reckless disregard for parental rights and individual liberty. The Republican-dominated legislature also balked. In May 2007, both chambers passed bills overturning the governor's unilaterally imposed health order.
Perry's vaccine order exposed lapse in political, policy judgments Rick Perry’s Superficial Extremism The Texas governor’s record doesn’t live up to his rhetoric.

“The Gardasil debacle is just one of many concerns a wide range of grass-roots conservative activists have about Perry’s record as governor. He’s soft on illegal immigration despite a few recent nods to border enforcement. He’s prone to crony capitalism. And as the vaccine mandate scandal shows, he demonstrated Nanny State tendencies that are anathema to Tea Party core principles.

Once again, the Perry campaign proves my point about the non-walkback-walkback. If Perry “erred on the side of life,” what his campaign continues to suggest is that those who opposed his Gardasil mandate from the beginning chose death. Instead of renouncing the human shield demagoguery he engaged it after the repeal, the Perry campaign has doubled-down. There is nothing — nothing — Tea Party about this.

The Gardasil debacle is a useful red flag on Perry’s basic political instincts, judgment, core values, and trust. It is no surprise — given his ties to Merck — that Perry is a consummate practitioner of corporate welfare “public-private partnerships.
Plumbing the rest of the Perry record

Perry’s campaign website lists the Trans-Texas Corridor as one of his accomplishments. But is it something Perry really wants broadcast as an achievement? The Texas Republican Party’s 2010 platform includes a plank specifically opposing the Trans-Texas Corridor.

Rick Perry has a very questionable past. But one thing is not in question and that is Rick Perry is NOT conservative!

I'll pass. I have done the due diligence on him.

As have I. Anyone wanting a conservative to get the Republican nomination will not vote for RINO Rick Perry.
