Former Union Prez: Union May Lose 40% of Members – Including Him – if Teacher Right to Work Passes
Capitol Confidential ^ | 9/16/2011 | Tom Gantert

As a teacher in the Grand Ledge Public Schools and a former teachers union president, John Ellsworth says the various education reforms coming from Michigan’s Republican-led government are “despicable.” He thinks the much-talked about “right-to-teach” legislation for public school employees, which would make joining a teachers union voluntary, is part of “a continued attack” blaming teachers for school woes.

Yet, even Ellsworth says he would drop his Michigan Education Association membership if right-to-work for teachers became a reality.

“Yes. I think I would,” Ellsworth said.

Depending upon what districts would be willing to offer to teachers who declined union representation, Ellsworth estimated that somewhere between 10 percent and 40 percent of teachers would bolt from the MEA.

The reason? He says some don’t think they are getting real value from the $90 per month in union dues he says they pay.

Here is a unique idea! Make the entire state of Michigan a RIGHT TO WORK STATE then watch what happens adios 12 unions.....I always felt the only difference between the Union and the Mafia is the Mafia don’t care who you vote for. They are both crooks. I recall at many TWU meetings asking why we must send our dues money to the democrats when Florida is a Republican State?

(Pass this jobs bill....for the teachers) Teachers Unions are some 80% 'Democrat', probably more. Obama's jobs bill will help keep un-qualified teachers on the job due to tenure and keep the 'rubber rooms' open for the free loaders. Pass the "Right To Work" for those freedom loving teachers who must pay 'dues' to their unions for the DNC and Obama regardless.

A very good question that was no doubt ignored or stonewalled. Personally, given a choice between the Mafia and Unions, I’ll take the Mafia. They make no excuses for the fact they are crooks and threaten and extort and kill people. Unions do the same but the wrap themselves in respectability.

It’s a feature — not a bug.

Join a Union. Not every dollar sent to a 527 benefits Democratic candidates.
