Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, the influential Budget Committee chairman, has kept his distance from the GOP primary. But after reading Newt Gingrichs latest comments about entitlement reform, he says the contenders must seriously address the debt crisis, not play political games.
[snip]
This is not the 1990s, Ryan says. The Mediscare is not working and we should not back down from this fight. I, for one, believe the country is ready, theyre hungry for it. They are ready to hear real solutions. We shouldnt wait around for the status quo to become popular.
Leaders dont follow the polls, leaders change the polls, Ryan says. We have moved so far in advancing entitlement reform, not just in Congress but in this [presidential] race, with most of the candidates embracing comprehensive entitlement reform. That has been a very good thing. At this point, we should be moving forward, not moving backwards.
Ryan adds that he is still undecided about whether he will endorse a candidate. But his message to Gingrich and the rest of the field is clear. Leaders need to go out and change things, speaking to people as adults, he says. We should not shy away from this fight, even though we know the Democrats will demagogue us.

I’m not a Perry supporter, but I agree with your assessment. I’m thinking Perry may finish first or second in Iowa. That’s bad news for my guy.
Damn the torpedos, full speed ahead.
GO NEWT GO..........
Paul Ryan could have won. *sigh*
Next time!
You got that right. Unfortunately, there are many here who are sentimentally reminiscing about the splendor of the Clinton years.
As a native Texan who has followed the Professional Politician, Rick Perry, for 25 years I can tell you this:
The reason he keeps winning is his political machine in Texas keeps him getting the GOP nomination. Texas is a Conservative State and will not vote for a DemocRAT. But, I promise you, if Rick Perry is the GOP nominee, we will have Obozo for four more years. I’ve quit trying to convince Perry-winkles that the guy who can’t remember what he had for breakfast this morning, admitted on Greta’s show on FOX that he forgot the voting age was 18 not 21 and called Solyndra a “country”, not a solar manufacturing entity..... is not up to the task of winning an election as President of the United States. The thought of Guv. dude getting the nomination would be funny if it wasn’t so friggin’ serious and scary.
Funny, isn’t it that Perry keeps on getting re-elected in Texas? hmmm
Funny, isn’t it that Perry keeps on getting re-elected in Texas? hmmm
I have read other native Texan FReepers posts that say he is a good guy.
Newt did not bash Ryan, he criticized one-size-fits-all government solutions with Ryan's mandated Medicare premium support reform plan as an example of inflexibility and robbing individual Americans of control.
Why does Santorum gets a pass for his love of big government? Is it his social message? He’s a nation building interventionist neocon who embraced Medicare Part D even pointing to it as a model for other reforms during earlier debates although later he’s flip-flopped regretting his vote for it.
Ryan for President!
THanks for the ping!
Amen to that! I think Dave Fry or someone else posted a similar example a little while ago. Anyway, it needs to be a campaign ad and in front of people every single day. Grow up, government!!!!!!!! or get out.
What is Ryan grousing about? Newt Gingrich has said repeatedly that he would offer Paul Ryan’s suggestion of govt paid private insurance to anyone who wants to get off Medicare starting next year.
Newt completely chopped Ryans’ legs out from under him w a soundbite the dems will use forever and ever.
The longer this charade w newt carries on the more pissed off i am getting at the newt worship. Newt is almost the same as romney at this point.
I live way outside the beltway and I like Ryan a lot
Look I like Paul Ryan but if you look at his budget plan which I did some time back its not very good. I’m being kind. He is an earnest guy and its commendable that Ryan has the guts to talk about entitlement reform which we need but nothing was ever going to come of Ryan’s budget plan anyway. His idea of weaning people off Medicare and onto private health insurance with the govt paying the premiums is a good idea and Newt latched onto the good idea.
Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney are certainly not the same. If you will look at the 21st Century Contract For America that Newt has put together I think you will see that it would facilitate significant changes.
Actually, we in the sentient community very much care what Ryan thinks.
Anyone who doesn't - and says so on a public forum - advertises an IQ lower than a lettuce sandwich.
He called Ryan’s plan “Right-Wing Social Engineering”.
So he thought Ryan was a right-winger, and thought that right-wingers were into social engineering, and somehow actually made it sound like he (Gingrich) wasn’t all for social engineering, when that has been his thing, fixing stuff through bigger and better government.
