There are a couple false "truths" which seem to be dictating much if not most of the Republican presidential race. One is that Newt Gingrich would be a great debater against President Obama. This accepted conventional wisdom is not only bogus; it is a myth of Herculean proportions.
It appears that Gingrich's entire argument for the nomination is that he is the guy we want in a nationally televised verbal brawl with the media's all-time favorite candidate. Nary has an opportunity passed when Newt fails to, in his typically egomaniacal style and with great bombast, assure us that all will be right with the world once Obama is forced to take him on in the ultimate battle of the brains.

It’s probably just a personality clash with me, but I cannot stand to listen to newt. He’s like fingers on a chalkboard to me. I find myself thinking “WHATEVER” after he gets 5 words out of his mouth. The guy is truly irritating(to me). I can’t make myself believe he is telling the truth about anything. I have no idea if he affects other people like this. If he does, he will not be a good choice to run against obama.
I think Mr Ziegler writes down some of his grandiose thoughts for others to read.
Newt can't beat obama. Republicans make up about 35% of the electorate. We need independents and some democrats to win. Newt will get none of that support and he'll really struggle to maintain support from female Republicans. If Newt's the nominee the gender gap will be tremendous. This is shaping up to be a disaster.
I wish I didn’t have to somewhat agree with you, but I do.
Newt knows what to say at moments, but he can blow it all a few minutes later.
I wish I liked his boastful arrogance, but I really don’t like it.
Newt is good when he is on, but I would always be waiting for that moment he flys off the track.
He also reminds me of a penguin.
John Ziegler certainly knows something about verbal brawls. Surf over here to see why.
The early demise of the Pawlenty campaign tells you everything you need to know about how this delusion/ignorance regarding political realities is stunting the Republican nominating process in a way Obama should only be able to dream about. Pawlenty was the one candidate who clearly would have made the election an unambiguous referendum on Obama... Pawlenty's campaign was doomed by some of the very qualities which made it so attractive to those who understand how a national presidential election works in the modern age. He was seen as "boring" by a Republican electorate that is clearly looking to be highly stimulated. But in his case 'boring" also meant "electable."
Brilliant, that guy is. Brilliant.
Well, I see Ziegler is still seething over Sarah Palin. Now that she endorsed Newt, Ziegler lashes out at him and by extension, Sarah Palin.
reformjoy is a Romney supporter.
Right, Joy?
It was, in fairness, one of Newt’s main arguments in his closing speech last night at the debate.
He believes that he can compete with an inferior war chest, due to him debating Obama.
Of course the author of this piece is engaging in hyperbole with his “all will be right with world” tosh.
BTW, There are way too many absolutely rubbish conervative commentators who write like high school juniors.
I hate he liberal sauce the MSN put on news, but I do not want the opposite sauce poured on my steak by conservatives.
Just give us the darned facts, please, and we have our minds
to use on how to interpret them.
“all will be right with the world”... indeed.
I think a lot of this article is spot on. Newt has repeatedly bragged that he is the guy to take Obama on and the only real credentials he’s giving is his debate skills.
So yes, expectations are being piled a mile high and that will eventually be a problem. Just like it was for me last night. After Monday’s debate I tuned in for the knockout punch and was totally unimpressed with Newt. I thought his first answer was unnecessarily drawn out, should have left off with first sentence. And he could have even used humor to diffuse it such as “Oh, I must have gone in the wrong door, was looking for the Presidential debate not Oprah”. Instead he appeared angry and nearly unhinged. The public doesn’t like angry politicians on the whole and I’m not sure that’s the best approach.
At any rate the rest of the night he was so so. Rick Santorum scored some hits and Newt skirted the issues with his answers.
I know I’m going to get creamed by Newt fans but now is the time to discuss it, not after the nomination. So bring it on :-)
“The public doesnt like angry politicians on the whole and Im not sure thats the best approach.”
I guess that is why the audience gave him a standing O. Twice. In two minutes...
It must be peculiar South Carolinian way of showing disaproval.
Send some Harvard anthropologists down there to live with the locals for a few years.
I demand answers :)
SOmeone in the press should ask Obama today if he intends to debate the Republican nom.
If he says, yes it would make it a little more difficult to weasel out of it later on.
I have mixed feelings about the whole thing.
On one hand, I think it’s time for a mean, asskicking sonofabitch to take the help and defeat Obama to right this ship. Newt might be a douche, but he’s a douche who loves his country and can do a lot of good things given the opportunity. On the other hand, independent swing voters are fickle people who seem to think elections are popularity contests.
It remains to be seen how the generally politically illiterate “swing voter” class would take to Newt. These are the people who vote most elections, but their daily dose of information is more likely to come from the Kardashians and Lady Gaga than actual news sources. Most, but not all, swing voters are swing voters because they’re too clueless to know where they truly stand.
If it’s a normal election, and Newt allows it to be about him and not about Obama, they’ll vote for the nice, good looking, calm Obama instead of fat, old, mean Newt who they feel just wants to pick on the poor little black kid.
If however, Newt can keep the focus on Obama and his failed policies, as well as the failure of liberalism as a whole...well, then, maybe he can tap into that anger that sits just below the surface of most Americans. That anger that their nation is being dragged through the streets by a bunch of overbearing thugs. A lot of people feel their lives are pretty good, and that they don’t feel angry, but lets face it, spend a few minutes talking politics with anyone who votes, and most of them are seething with anger under the surface about the national debt, unemployment and that feeling of hopelessness about the future. Most aren’t willing to give it all up though and are looking for someone to lead us back out of the wilderness.
Someone who can really teach them and educate them as to what we can do to fix it can win. Like Reagan did 32 years ago. If Newt can correctly convince them that, like Mom said, you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, and that, under the cover of an attractive, charismatic mixed-race gentleman is a lying, raging, corrupt Chicago Socialist, well, then that’s different. If Newt can convince them that there is still hope if we can remove Obama and replace him with a guy who has actually balanced budgets and created real change, that then we could be looking at 1980 all over again.
Ok, so whom does Mr. Zeigler think is a better debater?? Bammy!!??? It is to laugh.
Absent the teleprompter, Bammy resorts to . . . ah, . . . . er, . . . uh, . . . stam . . . . um, . . . . er, . . . . . well, . . . . uh, . . . . . stam . . . stammering.
And, THIS is what the DBM and Mr. Zeigler (apparently) think is a great debater!!??? Give me a break!!
I’ll take Newt anyday. In case Mr. Zeigler hasn’t noticed, Newt doesn’t require either a teleprompter OR an earbud with someone whispering in his ear what to say!!!
Agreed the audience loved it as did conservatives but it might not sit as well with the rest of the country, especially with Obama smiling happily from across the stage.
I love it when he hits the media but truthfully I like it better when he’s calm and matter-of-fact.

I loved last night when Newt said Obama could bring his teleprompter but that he’d (Newt) just use knowledge...
Um...he did address the charge and state that it was false.
There's actually some truth to that. Newt would get no more than three debates, with the third being scheduled as far from election day as possible (maybe early October). Remember what happened to Newt's polling numbers when there was a lull in the debate schedule over the Christmas break. They tanked. There's a world of difference between Newt the campaigner and Newt the debater.
Plus, there will likely be a crisis of some sort (Iran, terrorism, economy) around election time that will prevent Obama from debating as much as he'd like to (wink, wink).
I was against Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton for their despicable behavior in the White House, and I do not feel happy about Gingrich having the same aura of “it depends what the meaning of “IS” is...”
Yeah, I know what “is” means...
Slick.
I don’t want slick in the White House ever again.
And he can’t win that way... I have no idea who was
cheering in the audience. But it wasn’t me.
And I love the GOP.
