Bill would drastically increase boat registration fee in Maryland
The Baltimore Sun ^ | February 16, 2012 | Candus Thomson, The Baltimore Sun

A bill filed Thursday morning in Annapolis would replace the flat $24 boat registration fee paid every two years with fees ranging from $50 to $700, depending on the size of the boat.

Under the plan, the registration for a boat under 16 feet would rise to $50 every two years by 2016. Registering a boat from 16 feet to 32 feet — the most popular size in Maryland — would cost $125. Vessels 32 feet to 45 feet would cost $250. Vessels 45 feet to 65 feet would cost $500. The registration fee for the approximately 52 yachts over 65 feet would be $700. All of the new fees would be paid every two years.

"What's the benefit? Or is it just one more way to raise revenue for the state? No wonder people move out of Maryland," said Jesse Buckwalter, who keeps his 25-foot sport fishing boat in the driveway of his home in the Eastport section of Annapolis. "It seems exorbitant."

"He’s also suggesting removing all or part of the mortgage interest deduction for MD income taxes. Increase the car tag registration fees, increase the tolls for bridges and tunnels and others."

Last fall the Chesapeake Bay Bridge toll went from $2.50 to $4.00, an increase of 60%. See the related post below:

Sure! Because the political class is going to do so much more for boat owners.

I am not a boat owner. I've never been a boat owner; and I have no plans to be a boat owner. Nonetheless I am outraged.

Maryland's Tax Man
Nice video and song that lists O'Malley's new taxes and fees.

Fees are being hiked for every level of government. It won’t stop, until a large proportion of government employees are laid off after the bond collapse. They won’t have so much money and time for politics then.

I towed my 16ft beach catamaran behind the barn and left it there for the same reason..........maintaining the registration and other BS was just not worth it anymore.

Texas Parks and Wildlife was worried I'd leave potholes in their precious water..........

This sucks. I was planning on buying a 40-50 foot sailing yacht as my home and living on it.

And I’d be working in Maryland... so I guess the only choice I have would be to try and dock it in Virginia or Delaware and then commute. (which would also bite)

On the other hand, with a boat, I won’t have to pay property taxes.

This will lead to the “Derelict Marina” bill to subsidize empty marinas throughout Maryland. The leading Democrats will all stand around and wonder why this happened.

When I lived in Maryland, it cost me $85 every two years to register my truck. I wonder what the fee is now? And I had to get an emissions test on it, too. Waste of time.

In Virginia, you would have to pay personal property tax on the boat. Not sure about Delaware.

I once knew a guy who was forced to live on his boat due to marriage problems. He moved it to Washington DC to be closer to his job. But DC has its own set of issues. Good luck with the boat search. Yachtworld.com is a good place to start.

“Time you all started making bathtub gin.”

It’s probably illegal or heavily taxed, just like nearly everything else in Maryland. Fortunately I’m close to retirement and an exit.
