A bill filed Thursday morning in Annapolis would replace the flat $24 boat registration fee paid every two years with fees ranging from $50 to $700, depending on the size of the boat.
Under the plan, the registration for a boat under 16 feet would rise to $50 every two years by 2016. Registering a boat from 16 feet to 32 feet the most popular size in Maryland would cost $125. Vessels 32 feet to 45 feet would cost $250. Vessels 45 feet to 65 feet would cost $500. The registration fee for the approximately 52 yachts over 65 feet would be $700. All of the new fees would be paid every two years.
"What's the benefit? Or is it just one more way to raise revenue for the state? No wonder people move out of Maryland," said Jesse Buckwalter, who keeps his 25-foot sport fishing boat in the driveway of his home in the Eastport section of Annapolis. "It seems exorbitant."

And “we the people” keep takin it up the .....
With spring around the corner....I imagine that a lot of Maryland folks with boats...will find other states to register their boats and simply keep them parked in those states. By the end of 2013...the chief guy who counts boat taxes...will announce that over half the boats in Maryland left the state. Everyone will ask why, and be shocked at the logic. How to encourage them to come back? Well....you need to hire up a special company and pay them $500k to figure out how to bring boats back into the state.
Sounds like Marxists attacking the people’s leisurely activities. You can’t even bite into a donut now and not feel guilty about it.
In addition to internet sales taxes, new 6% sales taxes on some items now now taxed, increased gas taxes, elimination of a tax deduction on the amount of income tax paid for people with more than $100k incomes, .....

Good observation. In fact, the number of boats registered in Maryland has already decreased going from 205,000 in 2007 to 193,000 in 2010.
If you keep a boat in a Marina on the Potomac, you have to register it in MD. MD owns the river up to the mean high tide mark on the VA side. So, except for Columbia Island, which is actually in DC, this is also a tax on VA boaters.
Pleasantly lucrative pension plans for those keyboard operators who input the information for our own protection and lucrative finances for politicians running for higher office.
What more noble causes could be asked for?
“Sounds like Marxists attacking the peoples leisurely activities.”
Those leisure activities are (or rather were) made possible by the once thriving marine industy. On a national level this industry has been decimated by the failed Obama economy. Just imgaine the chilling effect these new taxes will have on the declining number of people who make their living in Maryland’s marine industry.
If conservatives won't fund Fluke's leisure activities, why shouldn't the left come after us for our leisure activities? [liberal "logic"]
Won’t be too many years until I leave this state and all their taxes. I’d be gone right now if not for my elderly parents.
More taxes = more spending = bigger government = more “services” = more votes for corrupt politicians
“Well, John Kerry certainly won’t be hiding his boat in Maryland.”
Great post. Wish I would have thought of that. Regards.

Some Sumbifch has gone crazy.
Ihave two boats, one is an antique that I used 3 times last year, the other a skiff I crab out of.
I can sell them both or just not register them, the hell with it. I won’t paythat much money to boat in a river with no oysters left in it, a few crabs that I can get in pots off the wharf and declining fish populations. Not to mention the fact that the water is so dangerous that last year we were warned not to swim in it because it’s an open sewer.
Fluke O’Malley.
O’Malley raided the transportation fund and others and is now desperately trying anything that will stick to make up for the Democrats blunder and cover their thievery.
He’s also suggesting removing all or part of the mortgage interest deduction for MD income taxes. Increase the car tag registration fees, increase the tolls for bridges and tunnels and others. Anyone want to add to the list?
I kinda, sorta listened to the governors conference in the background a couple weeks ago. The usual blather.
Some sort of idiotic statement made me turn around in my chair and pay close attention to a clown I had never heard of, Martin O’Malley.
You poor MD people are so screwed.
