Forget About the White House, it's Lost- Focus on Congressional Majorities to Neutralize Obama
Reaganite Republican ^ | March 14, 2012 | Reaganite Republican

After a disappointing night that found Newt Gingrich unable to register outright victories in the deep South, I'm left with the conclusion that the only capable conservative fighter we had left has been unfortunately tossed aside by primary voters in order to back an unqualified, low-charisma schmoe who will be pounded to smithereens in the general election if we give him the chance.

And that's a big 'if'-Santorum himself admits he cannot win the nomination anytime before the Tampa convention: an internal memo reveals the goal as a 'contested convention' (same as Gingrich has been saying for weeks).

I'm all for stopping Romney... but at what price? And Newt is supposed to drop-out now- to facilitate what, exactly?

Yeah- it would have been nice to have a proven conservative with economic experience, a record of accomplishment, impressive intellectual power/debating skills, and widely-appealing charm at the top of the ticket... but since Rick Santorum has none of those things, he simply cannot compete effectively with Obama.

I would describe myself as a 'right-wing Catholic'... trouble is, this one just ain't got the skills, while offering almost as weak a record of accomplishment as Obama '08. Current polls showing Santorum competitive with Obama mean nothing... wait till Plouffe and Axelrod go into attack mode and then tell me how he's holding-up. Lack of foresight has many forgetting what awaits us in the fall, I fear (one of the primary reasons I wanted to have Newt at Obama's throat, not some bumbling altar boy).

Voters are TOTALLY focused on jobs and gasoline pump prices this election year... while so many GOP primary voters rush to nominate a proven loser with zero economic/business experience that tends to wander-off into social issues rather than pledge $2.50 gas and a new (Laffer-endorsed) Reagan Revolution, as -say- Gingrich did.

All you millions who supported Newt before Romney and his PAC-men unleashed $50M in attack ads ought to be ashamed of yourselves for being so pliable- did you ever take the time to consider the source of the attacks that sent you scampering over to guaranteed-loser Rick Santorum?  Or did you simply lack the heuvos and political knowledge to defend your own choice?

For me, the primary race is over... I've already done what I can/voted for Newt, and have decided to pray for an open convention that will deliver us a more capable candidate. In the meantime -as floated by George Will a couple weeks back- it's time to fight for the Senate/House races the GOP strategically HAVE to win

Giving my all for the presidential contest seems foolish if you're talking Romney or Santorum- it's like being an car saleman selling Chevy Citations to anyone who will listen when he knows that they're junk.

What a relief it is knowing I won't have to defend Rick Santorum for the next 8 months... hard to fight for somebody you have no faith in. I would kill to have Perry back in the race, man was he overlooked- certainly by myself as well.

Team Obama licking their chops... the ads just write themselves

Alas, this is today's political arena: attack ads/manipulative MSM + gullible voters bring you the guy that's done the least, is boring as watching grass grow, who basically just warmed a Senate seat for 12 years... while the accomplished, the brilliant, the driven, and the gifted are ran-off- great.

Have fun, Republicans- looks like you'll have to try and beat Obama without me... and I'm not the only one.

You should consider changing your screen name, you are too much of a cry baby, take my ball and go home, spoiled little whiner.

I'm sick of the FReepers that whine like teenage girls after every primary return that their guy doesn't win.

I'm a Newt backer, but other people have their own opinion and their right to vote anyway they choose.

Try "rockyfeller rino" as a screen name because you've not got the balls to have the name Reagan as part of your screen name.

All this whining about our potential candidates is unbecoming. The Dems were licking their chops and the GOP was up in arms when Reagan won the nomination. The polls were showing Carter beating Reagan until right before the election, and we know what happened then.

Our situation is very similar to 1980. Obama's policies have hurt many people, and his negatives are going up daily. Unless things change significantly between now and November, any of the current candidates will beat Obama.

Thank you for that perceptive comment. Of course you’re right. Also, anyone who believes we can take control of the senate and still lose the presidential race is naive at best. Those people voting for Obama aren’t prone to split their ticket and vote for a Republican for senate. It will take a massive turnout by Republicans and Independents on election day to right this sinkong ship.

I don’t this it’s all that ‘dissapointing’

after being bad-mouthed all over and Romney proclaimed to be the inevitable nominiee, Romney still lost 70% of the vote to MORE CONSERVATIVE CANDIDATES

Gingrich and Santorum are 1 and 2 and should team up (eventually) I like Gingrich/Santorum, for 16 year stretch- but the other way around is fine

If ROMNEY gets forced on us I will vote (R) across the board for congress- but I will write-in Palin

Many people thought the young Carter was cute. No one thought Ford was cute. Jimmy had the hair too. Hair was big back then.

Yes, because the ever so lovable, humble, svelte, ethical and electable Newt Gingrich isn’t the nominee, we should just accept four more years of Obama without a fight. Sounds rational.

HEAR, HEAR!!!! It does seem that we have a lot of folks with defeatist attitudes popping up. There are occasions where it does a group good to let the self declared Summer Soldiers peel away and leave the hard core to carry on the fight toward victory.

I don’t think it is at all...Romney believes in free markets I am sure...he was the governor of a liberal state so he will have things that he agreed to pass that are not as conservative as we would like. But, Romney and Obama are not the same...no way.

Since you posted Rick’s High School yearbook photo in an effort to make him look foolish, why don’t you post your own, just so we can see what you looked like at 17?
