LOL! One of my co-workers, nicest lady in the world, has a heart tattoo on her hand, between her thumb and forefinger. It looks like it was done in prison (blue ink, unsteady lines).

Except in low paying jobs and business that cater to the 18-35 demographic, it is definitely true. That’s particularly true if that crap is all up and down your arms and on your neck. It just screams “I’m working for the minimum wage the rest of my adulthood.”

So you have turned away excellent technicians because you don’t like the way they look.
Wow, how absolutely short sighted of your company.

False...but it depends on the occupation and the hiring manager. We hired a graphic designer who is a genius on PHP web development and ignored the quarter-sized earrings. Doesn’t come in late either unlike the other “clean-looking” drama-queens we have in the office.

>>What is obviously concealed?<<

A turtleneck on a warm day, long sleeves that don’t fit the outfit — you can usually tell. But you are right, not always. Lower back tats, higher or lower than normal clothes levels, etc. certainly aren’t detectable and probably show some discretion on the tatee...

>>I have a banner on my calf, if I were applying for a job, I’s wear long pants or a calf length skirt. You would never know I had one unless you were checking out my great gams very carefully.<<

Please post a picture of said tat and gams so we may have our fine board of judges perform an analysis ;)

I’ve passed by technically adept people who are obese. A little overweight - no big deal. But 300+ pounds says you’re likely to have some expensive health issues combined with lost time and productivity.

Bottom line - doesn’t matter if you’re a genius; I need you on the job to be effective.

I was on the bus one day, listening to a guy in his early 20s talking with a man in his 60s, bemoaning his tattoo. Granted, he had taken the extreme way. He had spent hundreds of dollars having his face and head tatooed to look like a skull. The guy couldn’t get any kind of job (I don’t know how he was living or even riding the buss). Even tattooed girls didn’t want to date him. I fear the young man was only days away from putting a gun in his mouth and pulling the trigger.

Great tagline. It would make a great bumper sticker.

At Starbuck’s and Target, there are more self-immolators than anywhere else. Tattoos and piercings can help you win a Starbuck’s job.

With me it would depend on a few things. For a factory job where there’s no dealing with the public, just about anything short of facial tattoos are OK for a qualified applicant.

When I was a factory foreman almost my entire paint room were tattooed parolees and they were my most reliable people and got some serious work done.

we don’t hire if you are “visibly” overweight.

Yeah. Tell me about it...

Actually at STBX your piercing must be removed except one earring (its a food regulation thing) and tatts must be covered.
If the manager is not enforcing that regulation they can be fired, file a complaint.

I get one vote out of four. The HR person gets one, the campus manager gets one, and the team lead gets one. I am the technical reviewer to determine if the person knows what we want them to know. Campus manager and HR will usually toss those guys. Team lead goes along to get along. I am usually the odd duck out but for the most part like it that way. We get 40 to 70 resumes a week for two jobs a week. It is high paced technical help desk work and most of the people taking jobs turnover within about 90 days to find a better job because they are technical, can find a better job and they don’t have to put up with our crap. Management is picky and like it that way. I only want someone I can work with and that will show up.

I’m with you on this. I think the youth of this age the most impressionable in human history. Nothing more than malleable morons. Monkey see, monkey do. I won’t patronize any establishment where the employees all look like Queequeg. They think they’re being unconventional. Not really though; they’re practicing a rigid conformity of non conformity, immersed in a herd mentality. I also question their intellect. I’m absolutely convinced: the less within, the more without. Tattoos and body mutilation are a mask for an inability to express themselves verbally.

I have never seen a tattoo at a hedge fund, m&a firm, big eight accountancy, major HR dept., financial planner, SES office, the White House (except for us military types) or any other high-level gig.
