DID SENATOR OBAMA VOTE AGAINST THE COLUMBIA FREE TRADE AGREEMENT?

Posted on 04/14/2012 3:15:59 PM PDT by DIRTYSECRET

The Democrat congress voted against free trade under Bush. It was part of the Bush Derangement Syndrome. Didn't go through. Now Obama gets credit? Please explain.

Has the Free Trade Agreement gone through? The Dems (including Obama) have always hated Colombia because it was successful in defeating the radical leftists, thanks primarily to Reagan and Bush II.

Clinton essentially handed the country over to FARC, and Bush II recovered it. One of the good things that he did, but of course, totally unacknowledged.

The name of the country is “Colombia” and NOT “Columbia.”

Obama did oppose it. Hillary did too but had a campaign scandal as a "chief strategist" had worked for a PR firm with Columbia.

Pelosi's House spiked it before it even reached them, WAPost:

After the vote, Pelosi told reporters that President Bush's decision to send the Colombia Free Trade Agreement to Congress on Tuesday was "totally unnecessary." She said she had previously told him that it would not be considered for a vote until the White House yielded to Democratic demands for support of additional domestic economic stimulus provisions, such as more money to help workers who lose jobs because of international competition and an extension of unemployment benefits.

Take note she was asking for domestic economic stimulus in April 2008.

This was a trade agreement he blasted Republicans for not passing probably a year or so ago - all the while it was sitting on his desk and never submitted to the Congress. I have no idea where it is now.

WIKIPEDIA:

President Bush sent legislation to implement the U.S.-Colombia Trade Promotion Agreement to Congress for its approval on April 7, 2007. It was not approved before the end of the Congressional session in December, 2008 or the end of President Bush’s term in January, 2009.

President Obama has asked the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative to address outstanding issues in the agreement;[8] however, during a visit from Colombian President Uribe in June, 2009, Obama said he did not have a “strict timetable” to the agreement, as controversy over the safety of Colombian labor leaders continue.[10] President Obama’s failure to help facilitate and secure congressional approval of the Colombia Free Trade Agreement has adversely affected bilateral relations between the two nations.[11]

On October 12, 2011 after renegotiating parts of the agreement, it was passed by the House 262-167 and the Senate 66-33. An aid program for displaced workers called Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) was also included in the bill.[12][13]
