A petition posted earlier this week at change.org demands justice and equal treatment for Matthew Owens, a Mobile, Alabama man who was brutally beaten by a mob late Saturday night.
Earlier Tuesday, we reported that Owens was beaten after he "fussed" over kids playing basketball in the road. According to Ashley Parker, Owen's sister, one of the attackers said “[n]ow that's justice for Trayvon.”
Fox News reported Tuesday that the case is not being investigated as a hate crime, despite the alleged reference to Trayvon Martin, the 17-year-old who was shot and killed in February, and the racial makeup of the mob that beat Owens, a white man.
"It's being investigated as an assault," said Ashley Rains, public information officer for the Mobile Police Department.
Rains also said the comment Parker reportedly overheard has not been corroborated.
The petition, started on April 23 by a person who identified Owens as a "friend's brother," says the victim is in intensive care "with 13 staples in his head." Fox reported that Owens "regained consciousness early Tuesday" and "remains in serious condition at the University of South Alabama Medical Center."
The petition adds:
He did not know Trayvon and neither did the guys that beat him up nor did ue deserve it. Why is THIS not considered a "hate" crime?!?! Why is nothing being done for him? Its not on the news or receiving any kind of media attention....

i believe i have heard of about 10 episodes of HsP-on-white crime in the last 2 weeks where someone mentioned trayvon. nothing has been done.

African-Americans can't commit hate crimes because it doesn't fit the definition of a hate crime. Only crimes committed by whites against minorities count.

I am surprised that this got as much media coverage as it did and you know that the criminals aren’t going to be charged with a hate crime as Alabama is a solidly Red State that Obama has no hope of winning and they don’t want to be one of the reasons why Obama loses in 2012. Mobile is a Blue Island in the Red Sea.

How about instead just bring in a white “community organizer” to stir up the crowd?
The race riots will arrive on time to save Obama from having to face an election in November.

There is no such thing as a hate crime law. There are simply hate crime suggestions and they are complied with only at the whim of the prosecutor.
