The man tasked with leading the police department in Sanford, Florida, in the wake of the Trayvon Martin killing said communities should "take a good, hard look at who is selected," for neighborhood watch programs.
But, said Sanford's interim Police Chief Richard Myers, he still supports the programs.
"Neighborhood watch is at work in literally thousands of neighborhoods across the country and with no problems whatsoever," Myers told CNN's Erin Burnett on Tuesday. "I think the problems emerge from who the person is and perhaps there's a cause for communities to take a good, hard look at who is selected or who volunteers.
"Let's not kill the concept because of one bad, really bad outcome."
Myers, a former police chief from Colorado Springs, took the post Friday. He said he has plans to help the department that has been under the microscope since the February 26 killing of unarmed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman. Martin was black; Zimmerman is Hispanic.
"I'm here to help the community. There's a lot of healing that has to take place," Myers said. "I'm here to help the department get some stability."
His predecessor, Bill Lee, stepped aside as chief after a vote of no-confidence by city commissioners in April, clearing the way for Myers....

Wait, whaaaaat???
Did CNN just call Zimmerman a “Hispanic?” Somebody’s gonna be in hot water...
He’s 1/4 black, but they’ll slit their own wrists before you hear that from them.
What a moron!
I mean, who, having lived in the Springs, would want to live in a plastic dump like Sanford, FL? I do hope they gave the man a significant raise.
Those who ought to take “a good hard look” are those well meaning people that want to be of help and be on the darn neighborhood watch! Look what can happen.
A “bad outcome” is evidently any politically incorrect outcome.
“Let’s not kill the concept because of one bad, really bad outcome.”
If only this political tool was referencing Zimmerman’s unwarranted arrest and the inflated charges filed.
Let me guess.. All neighborhood Watch volunteers must be now be black and have current gang affiliations?

Can you think of a better way to protect the hen house from wolves other than to hire wolves to guard the hen house?
The Neighborhood Watch program has the potential of breaking the back of the illegal drug industry. With more eyes on the ground, the robbers and peddlers are busted. The Travon Martin case is an excuse to go after Neighborhood Watch.

Did the trial aready take place or did Mr. Zimmerman plead guilty while I was napping? If not, what the hell is this lamebrain talking about? Sounds like he has already decided that Trayvon Martin's death was a murder and that Mr. Zimmerman's claims of self-defense are so much rubbish. And this is the police chief of the town where Mr. Zimmerman lives and is on trial?
Lincoln had something to say about this:
"When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretence of loving liberty -- to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocracy [sic]." -- August 24, 1855 - Letter to Joshua Speed
I think we all did. At least, we certainly should have. What is the distinction between self defense, which they have been agitating against, and Community Watch?
It is that Community Watch is primarily about protecting those evil property rights, and self defense is about protecting ones own life. Which one is more fundamental? Self defense.
If you can stand up and condemn someone for defending his own life, what can you not say in condemnation of people banding together to protect mere property?
Deprive someone of the right to self defense and the right to own property, and you have made him a slave.
Reparations, dont you know . . .Why does CNN, why does wire service journalism in general, propagandize in support of that ghastly idea? Because the fact that such terrible ideas have political traction is bad news. And journalism is the bad news business.
“Let’s not kill the concept because of one bad, really bad outcome.”
Funny. I think it’s a really, really good outcome.
They was a defenseless citizenry so their little gangsta punks can mug, rape and rob at will without any threat of harm. That’s really what this is all about.
was = want
And they used both last names! Clearly crossing the line of bias that’s best for society.
NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH? say, wasn’t this concept tried before; early on back in ‘1776 or so? Some outfit called THE MINUTE MEN?
I say......the nation didn’t need these kinds of troublemakers then and it dont need ‘em now....the cops is plenty all ya need.... you folks know the drill ...’there in minutes when seconds....’ /s
