True story at a Ford dealership

Tom Selkis' (Latham Ford) True story recently at the dealership.....

"I'll try to make this as short and to the point as I can. One of my salesmen here had a woman in his office yesterday wanting to lease a brand new Focus.

As he was reviewing her credit app with her he noticed she was on social security disability. He said to her you don't look like you're disabled. She said "well I'm really not, I could work if I wanted to but I make more now then I did when I was working and got hurt" (non-disabling injury).

She said the gov't sends her $1500.00 a month in 1 check; she gets $700.00 a month on an EBTcard (food stamps), and $800.00 a month for rent. Oh yeah and 250 mins free on her phone. That is just south of $3500.00 a month. When she was working she was taking home about $330.00 per week. Do the math and then ask yourself: "why the hell should she go back to work?"

If you multiply that by millions of people you start to realize the scope of the problem we face as a country.

Once the socialists have 51% of the population in that same scenario we are finished........ *and we are real, real close*. The question is: when do we cross that threshold if we haven't already?

She didn't lease the Focus here because the dealer down the road beat our deal by $10.00 month. *Glad to know she is so frugal with her hard earned money!*

It seems to be SOP, have noticed, after ringing up a couple hundred dollars worth of nothing but steaks, chops, etc, and paying with someone else’s rapidly devaluing money, to have a stocker carry it out to their car for them. They think it’s real funny, no doubt.

1984 Mercedes 300D I bought for $100 seven years ago.

I used to get old Dodge Darts as my $100 cars that last forever. Unfortunately, that stopped working when I moved to Illinois, where Road Salt is the state's main crop for 5 months a year. Body cancer sets in real fast, even with undercarriage washing.

And no, Mercedes-Benz cars aren't immune.

Nice car, by the way. Stately.

That’s the democrat secret sauce, why the 47% are never going to vote for a Republican. Unfortunately, Republican politicians helped put this system in place as well.

I agree with you. The story just doesn’t sound right.

When I first got out of college and married, I worked for two years as a claims rep for Social Security. This was back in the early 70s.

SS Disability was really difficult to get. I would guess 90% of people who applied were turned down. After being denied one could file for a re-consideration. Practically no one ever got it on that.

Nearly every one who was approved, was by the administrative law judge after a hearing. I think they made the process long and drawn out to weed out as many as they could.

Which is why they don’t make slant sixes and five cylinder diesels anymore. They last too long...

The email is BS.

It can't be BS, it came from a government office in Nigeria!

Ha...I was asking myself the same question. Pride or not I am not so sure I would say no to such a sweet deal!!! BUT I would still vote republican. Dumb and dumber. Seriously - I was born in France. I can tell you that this story is true in France anyway. I am so sure obama worked hard to make it true here also. That's his for ever voting base.

One thing for sure is that, even the Nigerian scammers are "working" for a living.

Best looking $100 car I’ve ever seen right there!

Back in the good ol’ days, I knew some guys that always had junk cars around. I would just buy me a mid-1970s model LTD or Impala for $100-$500 and drive until it falls apart. Not exactly a babe magnet or anything, but it would get you there! I’d usually get about a year or so out of one. I’d always keep the title in the glove compartment for when they finally went down good, I’d just sign the thing and put it up on the dash for the tow truck operator. That’s still pretty dammed awesome when comparing to the $800 per month car payment we have now! lol

if you’ve read Starving the Monkeys, she is one that needs to be taken to the back end of the store, out the back where the cliff is.

$3500 a month. That’s $42,000 a year. Which ain’t bad, right? But .... how much would you have to earn *pre-tax* to take home $42K? Depending on a bunch of factors it could depend on a lot of things but it might be as much as $70K. And not mentioned here is the cost and value of health insurance. Basically that’s part of this woman’s “package”. The real value of this deal is maybe north of $80K.

Just as an observer of life and not a disputer of facts, I find those benefits and high amounts questionable for a single person on Social Security Disability.

My gut tells me the lady was "inflating" her income in order to qualify for the lease.

Since I'm retired, I sometimes watch a bit of daytime tv. Shows like Maury and Springer are full of adverts from attorneys soliciting SSDI claims. It's lucrative for them to take these cases forward.

"You've paid into this program your entire working life, now it's time to get the benefits you are owed"

Once you're on SSDI, I believe you are automatically eligible for food stamps and Medicaid. If you're on food stamps, you get an Obamaphone.

I think you partially answered your own question, 1970’s vs the 2008 - present. A huge difference I’ve found. I’ve known several people who have managed to get on SSDI, and it usually takes more than one go around to do it but once they do in my neck of the woods which is very rural, getting on SS disability is considered the Brass ring on the Carousel of welfare. You are set for life!

And yes, it pisses me off to no end too.

She may be “single” but the norm is a live-in boyfriend (typically working off the books and/or selling drugs) and 3 kids with various paternity.

“Not exactly a babe magnet or anything, but it would get you there!”

The whole point of a car is “getting you there”.

You made some good choices.
