This is what the State of Indiana Code states:
IC 5-16-9-5 Violations; Class C infraction and Class C misdemeanor Sec. 5. (a) Any person who parks a motor vehicle which does not have displayed a placard of a person with a physical disability or a disabled veteran, issued under IC 9-14-5 or under the laws of another state, or a registration plate of a person with a physical disability or a disabled veteran, issued under IC 9-18-18, IC 9-18-22, or under the laws of another state, in a parking space reserved under this chapter for a vehicle of a person with a physical disability commits a Class C infraction. (b) Any person who knowingly parks in a parking space reserved for a person with a physical disability while displaying a placard to which neither the person nor the person's passenger is entitled commits a Class C infraction. (c) Any person who displays for use in parking in a parking space reserved for a person with a physical disability a placard or a special license plate that was not issued under IC 9-14-5, IC 9-18-18, IC 9-18-22, or under the laws of another state commits a Class C misdemeanor. (d) A person who, in a parking space reserved for a person with a physical disability, parks a vehicle that displays a placard or special registration plate entitling a person to park in a parking space reserved for a person with a physical disability commits a Class C infraction if that person is not, at that time, in the process of
transporting a person with a physical disability or disabled veteran. (e) Notwithstanding IC 34-28-5-4(c), a civil judgment of not less than fifty dollars ($50) must be imposed for an infraction committed in violation of this section.

I walk everywhere, approx 30-40mi/wk and I still carry some extra weight. But the most ludicrous sight I’ve ever seen is ambling up into the parking lot of a grocery store after walking several miles to get there, and seeing two 300#+ EBT mamas sumo wrestling over the last disabled shopping scooter.
I'm a law abiding citizen and I expect everyone else to be as well. What country do you live in?
Lupus sufferes can look perfectly normal and still have a reasonable need for handicapped parking. Exposure to the sun aggravates lupus. I once knew a woman who spent a year in a wheelchair due to a major lupus attack. She avoided the sun religiously and I had no problems with her using a handicapped spot.
So are you saying that doctors who swear under fear of the law, will issues false forms.
When my daughter was 13, she had an operation on her leg which required an Ilizaroth (Like an exoskeleton).
The doctor signed one of those forms for only one month (a temporary place card) because he said the DMV did not consider this a “true” disability. She had to use crutches to walk with this thing on her leg. She was to have it for six months then a cast for another 4-6 months.
The CA DMV saw the device and changed the place card to six months.
It is just not that easy to get one, well in CA that is.
I have a “handicapped” parking permit in Indiana. Here you need to have a form signed by a doctor to get it. Personally I call the permit my “gimp ticket.” That took a while before my wife got comfortable with that.
When I lived in California they were everywhere. Once the cops in SF did a bit of checking and found that nearly 80% of the tags in use were fraudulent. Heck, I had guys offering to sell one to me on the street, just like fake Rolex watches.
With smart phones and small video cams and Youtube, you can stop this bs quickly.
Take videos of the wrong doers and put them on YouTube. Then send an email to your local fishwrap explaining what is happening. Then notify the local leo’s what is happening and how to get to the YouTube link.
The rectums doing this are probaby driving luxury cars and are big donors to that school and the church. So those in charge are afraid to step up and do what is right.
This kind of abuse is a microcosm of a much larger problem in our country. Those people who feel entitled to everything. An example would be the people who get food stamps who don’t actually deserve or even need them. Do a Google search for “EBT Amanda Clayton” to get an idea.
Every day I see people with handicapped plates park in handicapped spots, jump out of the car and run into the store.
The worst problem down here near the border is the cars with Mexico license plates. The police often will not even ticket them because it is not worth the cost to try to get them to pay the ticket. Unfortunately most of the Mexican drivers know this and just ignore the traffic/parking laws.
It really depends on the customs of the state. In some states, the doctors sign a lot of forms, and the state takes them at their word without a lot of hoo-haw. In other states, they are very strict.
Agreed. I have, but try to seldom use, a handicap parking placard. I usually keep it in my glove compartment. I have neurological disease (caused by statin drug) and for serveral months had to use a cane to get around. I still get very tired too early in the day. Inclines and stairs are tough. If there are no “regular” spaces reasonably close I occasionally use the placard, especially if there is more than one handicapped space available. I still feel like I am cheating sometimes...
On the good side, I am at least getting better, a little at at time.
If someone is parked illegally, then, I understand your frustration. My problem is that here in California the regulations for Disabled Parking has created a situation in which there are way too many Disabled Parking spots, most of which are never utilized. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone to any one of a dozen businesses, especially during the Christmas season, and am unable to find a parking spot for 20 minutes or longer, despite there typically being more than a dozen Disabled spots unused.
At the university, I know one student who illegally uses a handicap permit. I reported him one time since he was more than able body to walk. The permit is for his mother who is a Disabled Vet (DAV plate). Afterward, I didn’t see him park in a handicap space but he started to do it again. Next e-mail goes to several of the high level people.
Agreed. The law should be that they are displayed in clear sight and have traceable serial numbers, and that expire every 6 months or 12 months. Right now, they are being abused but scumbags who do not need them.
I can dig it. Make the third offense, vehicle confiscation.
Let air out of 2 tires. Most people have a spare tire, hardly anybody has 2 spare tires.
Drawback is, the car will sit longer illegally in a disabled designated spot.
A well dress man and a woman in their late 20’s driving a sports car, used a handicapped placard and sprinted to the door of a burger joint!
My husband has a handicapped placard and I have one in my Tahoe but I never use it unless he is with me. I fortunately don't need it and he does.
In the mid 80s while living in Prescott, Az, I noticed a pick-up
with a utility bed and a ladder strapped to the top. The sign
on the drivers side door stated that the vehicle belonged to
a plumbing company. I noticed that the license plate had the
wheelchair logo on it and I was instantly pissed off. I wondered
what kind of a debilitation a person could have and still be a
professional plumber. Later it occurred to me that the plumber
might have had a handicapped family member.
By the letter of the law here in Kalifornia, the placard is supposed to be accompanied by a form which states the name of the handicapped person. If that person isn't in the car and the driver uses a spot, he's at risk of getting snagged.
