In the event that the 'bellicose rhetoric' of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un turns into something more serious, the opening hours of conflict could be 'pretty ugly,' defense analysts warn.
Veteran North Korea watchers, citing what they see as increasingly troubling signs coming from the dictatorial regime, are voicing concerns that its new young leader, Kim Jong-un, could do something ill-advised, even start a war.
On Friday North Korea renewed what the U.S. has condemned as its “bellicose rhetoric,” saying Kim had ordered the nation’s missile forces to prepare to strike the United States and South Korea.
In response to the prospect of North Korea following through on this and other marginally less dire threats, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Thursday that the US military “will unequivocally defend, and [is] unequivocally committed to the alliance with, South Korea.”
But if hostilities were in fact to erupt, how might they play out?
Some former US Special Operations Forces and longtime Korea defense analysts have their own thoughts on what an “unequivocal” US military response could look like, including how US troops would be deployed in the event of a lethal first strike on US and allied military forces by North Korea – precisely the sort of move Mr. Kim has been threatening to make.
What would such a first North Korean move resemble? It might involve small-scale infiltrations using mini-submarines, assassination attempts.....

I’d predict the North Koreans fire a missile aimed at California and it lands about 100 miles away. In the drink.
Junior’s problem, to some extent, is that he’s gone pretty damned far out on that limb - remember, in Asian cultures, losing face is actually far, far worse than losing a war.
I tend to think he’s bluffing; if not, then he’s a madman with delusions of grandeur as an adventurer/conqueror. He’d find out very quickly that he’s no Alexander the Great.
Yes, he could inflict a lot of damage on the South, particularly Seoul, but it would essentially mean the end of the DPRK. The Chinese, most likely, would tell him, “Good luck, little buddy - you’re on your own!”
We have a president that hates the USA and loves the evil tyrannies of the world. It would not surprise me if Zer0 was not coordinating an attack on us.

No can take Seoul in less than 48 hours. They just make a blitzreig hail Mary across the sms and they own Seoul. The civilians will offer little resistance. No will not waste all that artillery, their most valuable asset, on Seoul. Instead they will use it to take out so and USA bases while rushing to Seoul. Little Kim does indeed have delusions of grandeur. He has been educated in the west, knows our true wealth. So he will set up his new empire in Seoul. But for this to work long term some of his buddies in Iran or Pakistan will have to make some moves. Or perhaps China, who earlier this year harassed japan in and in doing so got a great read on our defenses. Now they know where to hit. Russia will take care of the Mediterranean via Syria thru all this. Basically this is a set up. China is pulling the strings of their puppet and working with their new partner Russia. They all see temminent collapse of e.u. and us not far behind. That’s why they’ve been stockpiling gold.
A key part of my point is that everyone, we hope including him, knows that once it starts it will be over very fast and he will be very dead. Alas, as you note, so will a lot of other people.

The article is a good source of easy-to-read information from “analysts.” You know much more than I do about that particular situation, but other nations might also jump for whatever they’ve been wanting. Other than that, I think that it would be unwise to underestimate the damage that N. Korea could do. It won’t be the end of the world for most of us, but it could be costly.
On a side note, I see that the Korean situation is also getting the attentions of some end-of-the-worlders with extra character. If things get ugly overseas, maybe we’ll get some comedy relief in the boonies. [Stocked up on popcorn, cameras ready.]

I take it you’ve never been to Korea, especially North of Seoul or on the DMZ. Everything up there is designed to stop or slow down the DPRK troops so that more ROK and UN troops can get there. There are explosives, mines, dragon’s teeth, concrete blocks, pillboxes and hundreds of tanks up there. Every one of our weapons systems is decades ahead of their 1950-1970’s equipment. You do know that the ROK (”South Korea”) is a major world power in several ways, including technology and industry, right? The ROKs make their own tanks, APCs and aircraft. The DPRK (”North Korea”) relies on China and Russia for almost everything.
