The local tower is on the list for closure, but as long as the obama girls aren't affected by the budget woes and are having a good time, it'll be worth it.

My first long cross country with an instructor was to Meigs Field. I think I was 17, amazed by the entire trip and way behind the airplane. On the way back I forgot to switch tanks and never noticed, which ended up being good for a lot more instruction than I had planned on.

Hard to believe I survived my stupidity from one day to the next back then. Now I'm more worried about our surviving our elected officials and their agenda for us.

How about people that might have been flying into Chicago that morning only to find the runways destroyed? People could have been killed that day

We flew in one day, ambulances , lights all kinds of emergency vehicles , a small plane off the runway in pieces. Scared the hell out of my people and it turned out to be a unannounced filming for the old t.v. series E.R.

Yes another loss that’s never been reported is the rape of the Chicago Blues Fest. It used to be a free spirited, biker, hippie, New Orleans type of vibe. Then a few years ago some faceless bureaucrat in the Daley administration figured out people were bringing in their own booze so as not to buy their overpriced warm beer. Well under the guise of security they have fenced in the whole thing. No tents, flags, chairs, and of course booze. Now everyone lines up in the hot sun to get searched with nary a peep. You walk in and the flavor is gone.....and no one ever said a word.

Have they done anything with that property to make as much if not more than the field brought in with revenue?

“BTW, Chicago is one of the world's great cities. If you haven't been there, you're missing a wonderful experience.”

As one who lives in IL, you're going to find more than a few people who believe that Chicago is the Midwest's version of Hell. Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Governor Pat Quinn and Speaker Mike Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton are on Satan's Board of Directors.

Outside of Cook and Sangamon Counties, where Chicago and Springfield are located, these people are reviled by both Democrats and Republicans. These two counties are CORRUPT to their cores and 7 megatons each of “urban renewal” would be appropriate for both of them.

Yeah, I keep thinking of the old 1983 edition of Microsoft Flight Simulator. I think I might still have it somewhere for my Apple //e.

Mine too. I flew my Meyers 200D back and forth from Jersey for many years. Very exciting in a strong cross wind. Alpha Charlie 2976(Tango).
Owned it from ‘73 to ‘97. Saddest day of my life to see it go!

The worst part of Chicago is the politicians.

I envy your experience.

I was just doing a yahoo search for Meyers airplanes. Always loved them from afar, used to day dream about a 400 with my personal N number on it...someday.

Maybe the reality of ownership is different, but to me the Meyers 200 is one of those "too good to die" airplanes. I'd love to see it reborn, along with all of the Rockwell twins. Perhaps in a post-obama world, when we can get back to being Americans again.

Are you talking about the government or the city itself? The actual town and people are wonderful. Downtown Chicago is one of the most beautiful urban areas in the world.

What don’t you like about it? Politicians aside.

The politicians that run Cook and Sangamon Counties are a cancer eating at the entire sate. As for the city proper, I could care less. It is what it is — and it does not excite me. I’m not an urban city dweller because it’s too much like living in a hive. The only things that have interested me were the Shedd Aquarium, Field Natural History Museum, Adler Planetarium, and Museum of Science and Industry.

All of which are on the same campus. In any case Chicago is one of the most diversified and dynamic cities in the world. I love it.

Funny, I was always tolf that I should go to “Taste of Chicago”.

Okay, went last year and wasn’t impressed. All the kiosks sold almost the same food, only one supplier of beer (well, one microbrew was there) and the wine was not that good.

If this is the way it always was, I have no idea what all the hubbub was about...it was maybe a 4 or 5 on a scale of 10. The Navy Pier was better.
