Ten years ago, Chicago and the Aviation world woke up to see Meigs Field destroyed. Mayor Richard Daley took it upon himself to circumvent the law, the rules, and the rights of the citizens and pilots of the world to destroy a landmark. Many will remember waking up the next morning and watching the news in complete shock.
Meigs field had a deep history in the Chicago area. While it wasn’t the everyday home to aircraft, it was just for transient traffic visiting the downtown Chicago area. It was used frequently and was a treasure to many people who lived, visited or worked in the area.

BTW, Chicago is one of the world's great cities. If you haven't been there, you're missing a wonderful experience.
It was the startup location for several versions of Microsoft Flight Simulator.
What a thuggish abuse of power. He never even explained why. At the news conference he stated yelling that maybe he wanted to build a hotdog stand.
He can build his hotdog stand in hell soon,right next to the Ted Kennedy grease fire.
Back in the day I flew in and out of Meigs Field many times. Best part of a trip to Chicago... the airport was right downtown. Very convenient.
Same. Simulator only for that airstrip but was one of my favs as well.
I kept crashing my plane.
It was a damn waste of a good field for one thing........Dailey's wife hated the aircraft disturbing the yacht club.
I'm still pissed over it.

My wife and friends used to go down to Chicago around Thanksgiving on a bus from Wisconsin to shop Michigan Ave. This ended when the sales Tax was raised to 10%
I used to fly a Cessna 441 into there, as I recall there were a handful of planes that were parked there that morning. It took several months for them to be taken apart and trucked away.
Chicago is an evil place.
How about people that might have been flying into Chicago that morning only to find the runways destroyed? People could have been killed that day. The only good thing is that Dailey's wife died a horrible death from Cancer last year. I know thats mean, but I don't give a flying "F". Karma.
Now we only have the 'remains' ~ a few records ~ not even historic markers ~ and a newer field at Fort Belvoir. Fortunately there's an historic society that's busy with the task of identifying all of them and make these things known.
Note, not all Alexandria addresses are in Alexandria. A large part of Southern Fairfax uses Alexandria post office.
