Should McDonald’s Pay $15/hour?
PJ Tatler ^ | April 5, 2013 | Scott Ott

As low-wage food service workers demand a doubling of their pay, an uncurious journalist never wonders how people who earn $7.25 per hour were able to organize a “nationwide” strike replete with crisply-printed protest signs. For that matter, the dullard scribe doesn’t indicate whether “nationwide” connotes thousands of people in hundreds of locations or a dozen folks on two street corners.

Bad journalism is defined most often by what it lacks, rather than what it states. Incompetence, or conscious manipulation, are found in the question unasked, the fact unmentioned, the absence of context. The passive reader will never notice.

Reporting work of this caliber deserves less than $7.25 per hour, but it does provide an opportunity to explain, once again, how the world works.

Here are a few basic facts of life that each child should take to heart…and by “child” I mean journalist.

1) Your pay is not based on how much money you need to enjoy the lifestyle you desire.
2) Your pay is determined by the skill needed to do the work, and the difficulty of replacing you.
3) If your employer were to jack up your pay beyond those parameters she would have to jack up her prices, which would chase away customers, thereby reducing her need for you. (She alternately could reduce her profits, but that would scare off investors who provide the juice for growth. Stagnation is death.)
4) If you ever get paid what you’re worth, you will soon be fired....

This movement, like all labor movements, will end up killing jobs. A fast-food operator forced to pay $15 an hour will replace a 12-person shift of mediocre teenagers with 5 focused adults and the newest automation. Something called the “Momentum Machine” replaces burger joint line cooks.

Sure! Give everybody a $ 2.50 per hour pay raise!

Now, what is the government going to do to the “receivers” to make THEIR contribution to the company WORTH $2.50 more per hour?

/sarchasm - that gaping whole between a liberal and reality

The fast food industry is responsible for more deaths and cost of healthcare than gun violence is. Is it because that it’s cheaper to eat poorly than it is to eat healthy?

Over 1100mg of Sodium and 900 calories, 375 from fat for a tier 2 Cheeseburger at your favorite fast food burger joint. Then there’s the obligatory Fries and Coke, perhaps a milkshake and your talking more calories, more sodium, more Fat, more Carbs than an otherwise normal healthy person should eat in a day.

Aside from Constitutional prerogatives given to us, perhaps we wouldn’t be doing so bad if Fast Food Menu prices Doubled or Tripled.

If you ever get paid what you’re worth, you will soon be fired. Your employer must pay you less than your value in order to make a profit on your labor.

Uh...this is not exactly right or the author has poorly stated what they are trying to communicate.

Another view is that one’s pay is determined by the value added to the product or service. For example, the value added by a gas-pump attendant justifies a small increase in the price of each gallon of gas he/she pumps.

An engine mechanic adds considerably more value, through training and experience, than does the pump attendant. That person is paid much more than the pump attendant.

It is irrelevant what each person “needs”. The Added-Value determines the pay scale.

I don’t know - should McDonalds customers pay $10 for a happy meal?

Fact is, that kind of wage for a position like that is just silly. Raise the wage and nearly all the fast food joints will close within weeks.

Detroit has a “Living” wage law which is a super high minimum wage law. If it worked well, Detroit would be very prosperous with a low unemployment rate.

That's worked so well to keep people from smoking, hasn't it???
Personal responsibility is the key here.

It is cruel and heartless to pay anyone less than $30 an hour. Democrats who suggest a lower wage than that must surely hate the poor people. I’d sure like to see them argue against a $30/hr wage. Are they going to push some sort of economic theory that says unjustifiably high wages will lead to some sort of bad economic consequences? Let them make that case. Maybe I’d even agree with them.

“Sure! Give everybody a $ 2.50 per hour pay raise!”

I like to look at that differently. Give everybody a 33 1/3% pay raise. NOW you’re talking!

McDonald’s can pay whatever they want to pay within the law, but their business model dictates an economical operation in order to offer affordable fast food. Workers in union or government featherbed jobs are not known for being either fast or affordable. And therein lies the dilemma in the notion of high paying McJobs, not that the left is capable of grasping such a thing, or caring if they could.

Mcdonalds will simply lower the quality of their food again and other restaurants will hire more illegals. Problem solved...

$8.00?

Perhaps Ronald should grind up some more kangaroo meat from Austrailia, or something that would interest Andrew Zimmern. Then the ‘burgers’ could cost as little as a Krystal or White Castle. Even less.
