The Modern Defensive Rifle
The San Fernando Valley NRA Members' Council ^ | 6/1/2013 | Me!

Posted on 06/01/2013 11:56:49 AM PDT by Redcloak

After some careful consideration, I've decided that I don't like the term "Modern sporting rifle" to describe firearms like the AR-15 or semi-auto versions of the Kalashnikov. Yes, they're modern. Yes, they're rifles. And yes, they can be used for shooting sports. But the 2nd Amendment isn't about sporting goods. Calling these guns "Modern sporting rifles" is like saying that the Founders bled and died to preserve our right to engage in sports; to play games. It would be like saying that they fought to ensure that they and their descendents would forever have the liberty to engage in Pilates or badminton.

The purpose of the 2nd Amendment is to protect the right of The People to keep and bear arms; from the Latin Arma, meaning weapons. The State's interest in all of this is to maintain an armed populace from which to draw upon to form the Militia. But, the State's interest in the Militia is not the reason for the Amendment. The 2nd Amendment is a recognition of the People's preexisting right to have weapons for their own purposes. The "Sporting purposes" provision of the Gun Control Act of 1968 is a perversion of that concept. It treats the firearm as a sort of dangerous toy in need of regulation rather than as a Constitutionally protected weapon. Calling these rifles "Modern sporting rifles" adds legitimacy to that view.

“......I’m talking about how to speak to the targets of their propaganda; those who know nothing of firearms other than what they see on TV or in the movies.”

If they know nothing of firearms they don’t care about the topic, and are less than useless to those of us that do.

If we look at the responses to the assault on the 2nd Amendment by the Left, the very exciting leap in participation/membership in the NRA, the recall petitions in Colorado, to name but a few activities I think we see those that care are in full activism mode without a need to redefine whatever Leftist mischief makers define our weapons as.

I appreciate your intent with this thread, and the thought you have put to the topic, but I see such response to the Left as a road to compromise with an ideological lot that don’t compromise period. Compromise to the Left means they win, and you lose. They feed off of such responses to their crafted terminologies, and guide suckers into their web of deceit, and consume them.

Those people on the Left are mental, but they are crafty, diabolical, devious, and quite dangerous. One has to be very careful when constructing response to their crafted premise(s). I say the best response is to never engage them on their terms, let them spew, and go about business knowing what they are after, and prevent them from winning at all costs.

Very much .... I have the 6.5 Grendel that I attempted Col Coopers Apollo challenge with as well... Two great rounds. Have my paperwork in for a suppressor for the 300 and was thinking of going the SBR route later. Yet all we’re planning on is hogs and coyotes after dark here in the Texas panhandle..... Lot less crap / residue left on the 300 vs the 6.8 SPC .... I have a few thousand sabot’s for 30 cal down to .224 dia projectiles. Wondering what trouble I can recipe up with those later after the new is worn off....:o)

A friend just snagged a dpms 300 saum ....very very very nice 1000 yard minute of “brisket” plinker.

Pegged my awesome meter for accuracy and cool form factor, utilitarian and easy to dance to...I give it a 8.5 out of 10.

Hope yer well...back on topic !

Stay safe

You point out something very important: The vast majority of Americans have no passion when it comes to supporting gun control. What little they have may be intense, but very short lived. How many polls favored the most restrictive gun laws in the weeks and days following Sandy Hook? Now most Americans want Congress to move on and leave gun control alone. Their taste for gun laws blows over pretty quickly.

What I propose is an approach that uses the public's short attention span against the antis. Most Americans favor a ban on "assault weapons" because they think that these laws are about machine guns. Using another term, like Modern Defensive Rifles or even Modern Sporting Rifles, keeps Joe Sixpack from thinking that we're all talking about machine guns. It makes the public's brief support for more gun laws less intense and ends it more quickly than does ignoring the Left and allowing them to dictate the terms of the debate. I applaud groups like NSSF for attempting to change the terminology in the debate; I just think that there are better options than playing into the "sporting purposes" paradigm.

Re: The San Fernando Valley NRA Members’ Council

The NRA may win skirmishes in the near future but they will LOSE in the not so distant future. Why? Schools!

Our nation’s children are being taught to hate and fear guns and to viscerally **HATE** gun owners, those defending the Second Amendment and conservatives in general. In a few short years these children who are being indoctrinated today will be the nation’s leaders ( culturally and politically) and voters!

Specifically, our nation’s little boys are being emasculated by teachers who have been trained and indoctrinated in our nation’s communist infested colleges of education. And...The hearts and minds of the girls are being thoroughly scrambled as well.

Yet....Of the NRA members in the San Fernando area, how many of them, (pontificating on the importance of the Second Amendment,) will, on Monday, send their children into schools from pre-K to graduate school that are stuffed full to the brim with Marxists who hate conservatives, the Constitution, and the Second Amendment? How many of these NRA members, even if they ( by some miracle) manage to deprogram their precious children, are oblivious to the threat of this ocean of future voters that surround them and their children?

The Second Amendment?....Unless conservatives act ***immediately!*** to close down the Marxist and godless infested schools (government and private from pre-k to graduate school) and provide conservative and God-centered alternatives, the Second Amendment (and even the entire Constitution) is DOOMED!

The Marxist/progressive/collectivist/liberal Proggies are laughing at us.

I humbly submit that "Modern Defensive Rifle" is a better term to use for these firearms.

Which will get you labelled paranoid, imagining zombies, or King George (or Zombie King George) are coming to rape your crops and burn your women.

"Modern Utility Rifle".

Modern, because single shot is a 300bps modem in a broadband age.

Utilty, because a gun is a tool, like a butcher's knife, or a harpoon, or an alligator.

Excellent point! I was in combat arms for sixteen years, then after a break in service came back as a warrant officer for another sixteen in the area of logistics, which is the backbone of combat power projection and I had a ball rolling the convoys & getting the troops on the planes.

IIRC, the Army still requires officers entering the combat service support branches to do detail time in the combat branches to learn the who what where & why of how much the combat folks depend on the effectiveness of their support logisticians.

Patton was just as proud of his Cannonball Express truck drivers & fuel haulers as he was of his infantrymen, artillerymen, and tankers.

My stepson has a degree in History from a Tennessee University. He was actually shocked to move to another state to teach and find that the curriculum does not teach the kids about real American History, literally going to war to gain independence from GB. The warrior in American History is becoming a never taught myth. America is already defeated given the demographics achieved by/of the leftist vermin.

You clearly don’t know my kid. :-)

In the Sandy Hook aftermath, some of her classmates had the predictable we-need-to-ban-these reaction. She was the one who responded with “Don’t be stupid. It won’t work.” That threw a nice, wet blanket over the whole thing and their enthusiasm for gun control quickly faded. Now she even has some of them asking to go shooting.

It doesn't need to be depressing if conservatives will shut down the indoctrination machine and build alternatives to “pass the torch”.

Here is Charlton Heston talking about passing the torch in a Youtube video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrnOFMk8NPM

But...conservatives **must** act NOW! It is almost too late.

A drop in the ocean of indoctrination.

Even if individual children of conservatives are deprogramed ( a questionable quest) they will be swept away by the same tsunami of indoctrinated future voters that will destroy freedom for all.

If conservative do not pass the torch all will be lost. This must involve shutting down the indoctrination camps ( pre-k through graduate school) and build **private** conservative alternatives the future for freedom is bleak.

I love a Marlin rifle. Any caliber any model. Lever actions are my favorite though.

Is that another designation for an SKS? The pic isn't of my rifle but looks just like the Norinco SKS I do own with one of the stocks I have for it.

I see things a little differently.

The Dem/libs have been engaging in a steady push to infringe on our right to keep and bear arms for decades. And this is how it has been working out for them in the last two decades...

And in the last two months... (Nov. 2012 and Dec. 2012)

And it continues...

MOLON LAVE! WE'LL BUY MILLIONS MORE. ;-)

You are thinking in a short term manner. We will lose this nation if we don’t pass the torch, and we are not doing that.

See the NRA video with Charlton Heston:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrnOFMk8NPM

!!!!!!!CONSERVATES ***WAKE UP****!!!!!!!!!

Our nation’s children are attending schools with teachers trained by Marxist in their Marxist run colleges of education, and are being indoctrinated by curriculum and textbooks developed by Marxists. Future leaders are attending Marxist run colleges and universities. They are being taught ( right now) to hate and fear gun, gun owners, and to hate conservatives.

So what if individual children survive this? All will be lost and all will suffer due to the voting booth.
