President Barack Obama laid the blame for the U.S. government's partial shutdown at the feet of House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner on Thursday...With 800,000 federal government employees forced into taking leave, some agencies have almost entirely shuttered, including NASA, the Commerce Department and the Environmental Protection Agency.

It might be worse than we thought....

“Bright” co-worker seriously believed that the House had not passed even one budget this past month.....

Kept insisting each effort was only a piecemeal part of the budget......

The MSM is doing a great job and it seems many have missed the other sources for the real news.

unemployment payments are deducted from the retroactive pay (if approved). The problem is not the federal employee, it is the federal government doing too many things within a system that lacks accountability. I am a furloughed NASA employee that works in an area critical to national defense and commerce... I have not, and will not, collect unemployment even though I am ‘entitled’ to do so. I proudly serve the American people and occasionally have to remind a coworker who we work for... but do tend to keep my head low under the current administration. I have kids and welcome a great downsizing of the government for their benefit (and the benefit of all)... I just happen to believe what I do is important (it does have bipartisan support in Congress across multiple administrations). But, if the time comes that NASA ceases to exist, or the specific technical area I work in is dissolved as part of a great reduction in the size of government, I will understand. I do not belong to the fed employee union for which I am eligible (do not believe federal employees should have unions). Not all federal employees are the enemy... a fair number are pretty darned conservative.

Lots of businesses are waiting to see if the republicans will cave. If they do, millions more will lose their jobs, healthcare costs will go up, insurance costs will go up, less care will be available. The country will collapse.

800K workers now told to stay home are going to get their complete pay. Such a deal. I am tried of their whining. It is a paid holiday for heavens sake.

Right! Job Insecurity - they will get back pay unlike the private folks. They only get a welcome vacation with pay. What a grand bargain!

Oh and just who of them do you really think will have any problems making their payments? They are Government workers and can get loans at will for as long as they need! Their salaries are essentially guaranteed! These folks need NO sympathy at all!

Boehner is such a tool. This President talks crap about him and he comes running to negotiate with him still.

The 20 million unemployed are still enjoying their 99 weeks of unemployment. The 800,000 have nothing....yet.

The 800K have already lost 20 percent in 2013 AND have not had a raise in years. However, the civilian workers just received an overall raise with the minimum wage raising which makes everybody get a raise (mostly anyway).

If the National parks are down, where are they getting all these Arseholes guarding statues on a lawn? Why do we need them anyways?

This figures. I knew you were applauding the Vandals that cut off Reagan's arm because they do not have security in that country. I guess you love seeing our historical places destroyed. Someone needs a serious education.

My husband is a contractor and unable to work due to the shutdown.

That surprised me when they furloughed our IT personnel at the Naval Academy. I thought contractors already had a contract that was signed at least until December 31, but I guess this must be different.

The average citizen who is laid-off, gets squat.

BS. Most average citizen’s are collecting vacation money for 99 weeks from unemployment. I have friends that are getting big unemployment money and could easily get another job. He has an MBA and 20 years of experience but enjoys the time with the kids and staying at home with the wife. Civilians have been a drain on our economy for YEARS!

As bad as it may be for these workers, I can’t feel much sympathy when I’ve been out of work for most of the past three years.

Unemployment doesn’t cover it and the 800k should file for unemployment vs. deferring their full pay

Ok folks, I'm here, once again, to speak for the little guy working for Uncle Sam. Yes, believe it or not, some of us federal workers are not big shots, don't pull double or even triple retirement from the US Government. We work as general office workers struggling to make ends meet, just like you!

Did you ever think that maybe, perhaps, some of those 800,000 ALREADY KNOW WHAT IT'S LIKE GETTING LAID OFF??????

I only get paid $30,000 a year, GROSS, on my federal salary. I net only $20,000 of that. For for 7 years prior to getting on full time I was working part time for over 6 years, while trying to support three kids all by myself! So I know what it's like to live hand to mouth, day to day. Heck, there was a time I even lived in an apartment with no power because I couldn't pay the electric bill.

So choose your words carefully when making blanket statements like that. Some of government employees do not make a whole lot of money and work hard to earn our paychecks.
