New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) leads former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (D) in a hypothetical 2016 matchup, according to a new poll out Tuesday.
The survey, from Democratic firm Public Policy Polling, gives Christie 45 percent support among registered voters nationwide to Clintons 42 percent support.
That result tracks closely with the outcome of a survey of Iowa voters out this week, which gave Christie a 5-point lead over Clinton.
Clinton leads every other potential Republican presidential contender, but they all keep that lead to single digits, with Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.) and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush down by 5 points, while Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is down by 8 points.
Clinton is the only potential Democratic presidential contender that keeps Christies lead down to single digits, however every other Democrat tested trails him by anywhere from 11 to 22 points.
Christies advantage lies primarily in his crossover appeal. He draws 12 percent of Democrats and leads Clinton with independents, 49-26 percent, while a quarter remain undecided.
Clinton also ties or loses every age group past 30 years old to Christie. She maintains strong support among the constituencies that elected President Obama, however, including young voters, blacks and Hispanics.
Both Clinton and Christie lead their respective primary fields, Christie with 19 percent support and Clinton with 66 percent support.
Cruz and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee come in close behind Christie in a Republican primary, trailing him by 5 and 6 percentage points with Republican primary voters, respectively.
Still, the most popular Republican tested is Huckabee, who enjoys a favorable rating from 65 percent of Republican primary voters polled.
The survey was conducted among 1,316 registered voters from Dec. 12-15, and has an overall margin of error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points. PPP also surveyed 600 GOP primary voters and 453 Democratic primary voters from Dec. 13-15.
This is in the Democrat primary, right?
What else could it be?
Oh, I’m sure he outweighs her....
Have they had the weigh-in yet?
What this highlights is that conservatives should stop trashing each other or we’re gonna end up with a candidate such as Christie.
The best of the worst.
Agreed. One candidate needs to emerge early in the process.
Clinton would be president before I'll vote for Christie. better the liberal we know, than the one we don't.
He boasts a household name, an impressive list of accomplishments in the countrys most populous state a state some once deemed ungovernable glowing national media coverage and a deep familiarity with the pitfalls and rigors of a White House bid, having run three times before.
Now, some are pushing Brown to consider another try for the White House, even if it means taking on Hillary Rodham Clinton, the prohibitive, if still undeclared, Democratic favorite.
I think Jerry is precisely what America needs, said Rose Ann DeMoro, the leader of a national nurses union and a strong political ally of Brown. He has the courage of his convictions, which we havent seen in a very long while...........
Oh, horse poop. Outside of Joisy, nobody ever heard of Ton’s of Fun. Even Tony Soprano (if he was alive) said “Who?.”
- Never happen in flyover country -
- Christie is only for Christie - and he is dirty and a bull shooter
Let moonbeam run... let ten moonbeams run... let 100!
For the Dem nomination?
I will not vote for Christie. No more RINO’s.
Let the “then you want (fill in the blank) to win” flamers flame away. That screed is tiresome.
“Which one is the rat?”
Well its no problem pinning the tail on bigger rat!
Also, about this time in 2009, polls showed Romney (the candidate preferred by Dims) leading by about 4%. In 2005, they showed McCain (their choice again) up by 5. The early polls are used to project who they think they can beat as the only hope for the GOP.
Hitlery will save us.
Oh goody Tweedledum and Tweedledee
He is even fatter than she is
After all, he is the elephant in the living room.
