The art world has always marginalized Norman Rockwell. They don't consider him a "real" artist. They call him an "illustrator." But the guy was a tremendous artist.

This is considered one of his finest. Note the contrapposto pose and the moonlighting on the scout leader's face - something only a well-trained artist could pull off successfully:

I saw his traveling art display last year at Crystal Bridges in Bentonville, AR. It is astounding! Definitely worth it!

He may or may not have used enlarged transparencies (or those projectors that let you trace an image).

Photosourcing in American illustration art is common. Paperback covers, magazine covers, interior illustrations.

Depends on the budget of the work and how many volunteers an artist can find rather than hiring models.

Even Rene Magritte photosourced his paintings.

What does "closeted" mean anyway?

Solomon drops hints about some kind of attraction to men or boys but admits that she doesn't believe that Rockwell actually had sex with any of them.

Norman Rockwell may or may not have been aware of some physical attraction, but nothing that Solomon relates would have been scandalous or surprising in an artist of Rockwell's day.

I'm pretty sure though, that the "pedophilia" that she finds in pictures like that of the cop and the runaway is in her own head, a product more of the suspicions of our own age than of anything in Rockwell.

The American Illustrator movement (from the turn of the century through the late-mid century (~1964)) is neglected in America's art museums. Instead they are dominated by abtraction and "anti-art" (designed at a time to be a counter to the establishment but it has BECOME the establishment).

In 1970, museums didn't consider photography "art" either.
