Congresswoman Argues for End to “Welfare” as We Know It
Semi-News/Semi-Satire ^ | 10 Jan 2014 | John Semmens

Posted on 01/10/2014 4:00:17 PM PST by John Semmens

Representative Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) urged that we stop using the term “welfare” to describe the handouts government gives to support a distressingly large portion of the population.

“Welfare conjures up an image of some lazy person sitting around watching TV while taxpayers have to foot her bills,” Jackson said. “We need to change this image.”

The change Jackson is pushing is to rename the program. “If we were to call it the transitional living fund we’d completely change people perception of what is going on,” she bragged. “’Transitional’ gives a sense of movement to replace the sense of stagnation that welfare implies. ‘Fund’ implies that it is an investment. And ‘living’ sounds so alive and uplifting.”

Representative John Conyers (D-Mich) praised Jackson’s intent, but urged caution. “There’s no question we need to upgrade the terminology,” Conyers agreed. “However, I’m not sure we should jettison the term welfare. The word ‘welfare’ is in the Constitution. ‘Transitional living fund’ is not. Since the ‘good and plenty’ clause of the Constitution authorizes Congress to provide welfare I don’t know if it would be safe to abandon it.”

Let’s call it what isn’t really is: Ill-gotten gain, legalized theft.

It may be ambitious, since she is a protected species, but is SURE is easy. That miserable old cow.

What?!? Blaspheme! I loved Choo-choo Charlie's treats. It made my parents think I was taking pills when I was a teen.

You're on my s***list now, Geron. >:^(

The uncle of my former wife was the inventor of Good and Plenty. In the old days it was very good. Haven’t had any in years. Made with real ingredients, it was.

Also went to school with the son of the inventor of Bonnamo’s Turkish Taffy.

And speaking of candy, my neighbor/friend and family were the owners of Mary Sue Candies (esp. their creamy Easter Eggs). One brother was actually named “Candy”. Larry was the other, and a good crosscountry runner at Baltimore City College High School.

We lived in “sweet” times back then.

And then there was a girl named “Candy”. Talk about a “sweet” looking thing. I wish she had been another story for another day, but nothing happened.

But there was “Cookie”. Beautiful, blond, nice figure ***. Later turned out to be a “stale cookie”. What a shame.

Also, there was also another “Cookie”. Tall, pretty, slim ***. Almost forgot about her. Had potential but distance killed that relationship (that’s my story and I’m sticking to it).

Wow, what a memory trip I just had, back to the early 60’s. Now, if I only had photos to show you. Sorry. Will try to do better in my next life (will carry a photophone then).

Meanwhile, back in reality, my granddaughter called and I told her where I left her some new “Star War” cards. Now she is one happy kid. “Happy, Happy, Happy”.

May the force be with you all!

Indeed it is, and John may have met his match on this one. Acorn-Head is really difficult to outflank, as it were.

(I've been an avid reader of his since wayyyy before the FR days, on pulp. He's as good as they come.)
