Feel that? Something historic and important just happened. It might even be a teachable moment, and its certainly therapeutic. Why, liberals will be able to like their country just little bit more. Come on people, feel the love!
A potential fourth round NFL draft pick has declared is own truth, and come out as gay. Having taken the courageous step of joining societys most trendy and celebrated grievance group, Missouri defensive end Michael Sam is now basking in the media adulation.
ESPNs Chris Connelly stressed to Sam, You could become the first openly gay player in the NFL, thats a momentous thing. And Connelly sounded momentous just saying it. To Sams contention thats hes a football player, Connelly, corrected him: Youre a football player responsible for a landmark moment within American sports right now.
One Jeff Pearlman gently approached the issue in a Sports Illustrated blog post cleverly titled, I want Tim Tebow to Fail. He wanted him to fail because a famous Tim Tebow is a dangerous Tim Tebow. Tebow, you see, scares me, and judging from his fathers website, his upcoming Super Bowl ad and mounting knowledge of his way of life he should scare you, too.

“Jerry Jones has done dumber things in the draft.”
Maybe because Jerry Jones is drunk so much of the time.
It takes 5 years to make an NFL quaterback with some exceptions. Look at the rosters of NFL quarterbacks. How can anyone say that Tebow can’t compete with any of them.
Because he’s washed out with 3 teams and 4 coaches. And these days the 5 year rule seems to have more exceptions than followers. Guys might not fully develop their talent for 5 years but we can pretty clearly see who has the talent to develop in just a year or 2, the majority of SB winners (and a few SB losers) this century got that first ring with less than 5 years starting.
Tebow got criticized 1) because he wasn’t any good, and 2) because his evangelical fanboys couldn’t stop overpraising him and whining that he wasn’t getting a fair deal.
The “it takes 5 years for a QB to develop” has been obsolete since the 1990s.
Russel Wilson in year 2 won the Superbowl. So did Tom Brady and Ben Rothlisberger.
Tebow can’t throw a football and brings such a circus with him that no organization wants anything to do with him
Agree with your post.
Many of these top prospects are going to advanced qb schools (like the one run by the Manning family) as hs freshmen.
Perhaps an order of magnitude more intense than 25 yrs ago.
Beginning to wonder if all this Gay NFL Player talk is an out or a ruse to cover for all these analysts being wrong about the #1 Overall Draft Pick...which now more than likely will be UCF QB Blake Bortles...which the Houston Texas coaches want?
Nuff said...
Yes. Tebow’s issue will forever be his throwing motion, which he has had since he was a child.
No matter how much coaching he gets, or how hard he works to change that motion, once in the line of fire on the football field, he will revert back to what is natural to him.
He is a great athlete and an even better person, but the young man is simply not an NFL QB
Jeff Pearlman is the guy who rode around Atlanta with John Rocker and waited until Rocker’s guard was down and speaking “off the record”. Then he hatchet jobbed him.
He got a tv gig with ESPN, right?
I figure he has a bright future in ministry or coaching too.
Read his book and enjoyed it.
of course, the level of anti-Tebow bias reaches epic proportions. only to be surpassed by the rabid anti-Palin types
The controversy referred to is the QB controversy of having the fans want a different starter than the coach which is bad for a team. Sams not a QB, none of that will apply.
the 'controversy' was over his Christianity, not his position. it blossomed into his position when the coaches would play obviously less skilled players instead of Tebow.
having a fag on the team that will be celebrated by every media type will generate lots of hate and animosity towards the team and coaches. obviously they don't care about the controversy. it was all religious bigotry. and that's fine.
that just means they don't want Christian fans. i'm ok with that.
enjoy your alternative play style.
“One NFL player said it best when he described what it will be like to have a gay in the locker room while all the guys are in differing stages of undress including completely naked.”
Yep, that’s also a major issue in the military. As far as I can tell, there should be at least six different showers at this point, and maybe more (straight-straight male, gay-gay male, ???-??? male (transexual etc.), and the same thing for females). If you’re going to allow gay males and straights to shower together, I think by the simple principle of fairness you should allow straight males and straight females to shower together (consensually of course). That way all parties involved can get some voyeurism in as desired, right? It’s only fair....
“couldn’t have done worse then manning... and would’ve cost a lot less”
Manning destroyed the record book and took the Broncos to the Super Bowl. Surely you aren’t suggesting Tebow would have equaled that performance?
you do realize the quarterback is just one person. although important, the team makes the difference
could Tebow have equaled in performance with the same team? we’ll never know.
but we do know that same team was doing horribly before Tebow stepped in... and they turned around.
I'm a big Tebow fan...but your last sentence is ludicrous...
The NFL is a passers league...
Tebow just doesn't have the passing ability, heart...yes...guts... yes...legs...yes...arm... no...
Too bad he won't consider playing a different position...
“could Tebow have equaled in performance with the same team? well never know.”
Then why did you just say he couldn’t have done worse?
Sam is a significantly better fit for the NFL than Tebow. Tebow is not an NFL QB. Period. Sam will be a good Sam linebacker or fit in well with a 3-4 defense. Great speed off the edge.
Most NFL draft projections see Sam as a midround pick, with some saying he could go as high as the third round with a possible position switch to outside linebacker. Sam is rated as the 12th-best outside pass-rusher in the draft by ESPN Scouts Inc.
