Consumer prices are skyrocketing. The price of meat, poultry, fish and eggs was up 0.7% in May. The price of chicken is up 50% in the last decade. There are some mitigating factors in these price increases. The cattle herd isn’t very good this year and a pork virus has killed thousands of pigs. Nonetheless, with incomes stagnate price increases on staples such as meat and eggs is felt by the middle class. Consumer prices generally were up 0.4% in May after a 0.3% increase in April. Inflation has arrived after years of money printing at the Federal Reserve. (with the backing of Obama and to a lesser extent Bush)

Prices higher, product in package smaller. Next potty break, look at the distance between the end of the tp roll and the end of the holder. The roll might still advertise 1000 sheets, but the rolls are thinner.

We might have to cut out bacon, though. Closing on farm property on Friday... I am going Galt. Priorities are: 1) Fencing so the goats and sheep can maintain the lawn. 2) Splitting enough wood this summer to carry me through next winter's polar vortexing. 3) Build a smokehouse. BACON! Will be willing to trade unlimited BACON to qualified in-laws. Private message me your daughter's curriculum vitae. Experience washing clothes on a rock at the edge of the river, pulling calves at 3am, and picking cabbages is highly desirable. Candidate will be expected to come equipped with her own truck and gun collection.

It doesn’t threaten the underclass or the poor?

Not to worry. Ramen noodles are still cheap, according to the Allstate Insurance guy.

Gardening is sometimes not all that economically. I do it for pleasure, but there is no way my family could survive on what I grow. Moreover, it is not economically that feasible. Much of this may be my own lack of skill at gardening, but even from a business approach gardening entails a great deal of "sunk costs." I have grown many plants from seeds, but many fail. The costs of small vegetable plants themselves have skyrocketed. Go price pepper, eggplant, or tomato plants at Lowes or Home Depot. I suppose my compost piles would suffice if they were better, or natural fertilizers would be cheaper, but I find myself having to employ purchased insecticide, plant food, and top soils to achieve any sort of success. Add to this the cost of watering!

The most successful garden I ever had was grown when I lived overseas. All of my domestic gardens are for the joy of it, or to obtain fresh herbs. But the cost of raising one tomato plant today quickly eclipses any economic gain.

Nope. They get all the food and better cuts of meat for free. Got to feed the children you know. As with healthcare, too much government causes runaway inflation with too much money chasing too few goods. Now with so many of the so called poor getting free food that increases demand and voila, we have higher food prices.

Problem is that people getting free food will never be weaned off the dole. You get a job and you have to pay for your food. WHAT??? No way.

You are correct. I used to heat my home with wood and after ten years I got a full central heating system. My comment was there was a reason civilization migrated away from wood heat.

Gardens are a LOT of work too. So is making your own clothing. There is a reason a “specialized” society is so full of plenty.

But when you grow your own, there are health factors. Also, with our greenhouse we hope to be starting our own plants from seed as our neighbors do. Our neighbor GAVE us 20 tomato plants this year.

And on the eighth day God created BBQ sauce........

I don’t buy steaks and don’t even look at them anymore because of how expensive they’ve become. However, this morning when I was at my local Meijer store, I glanced in the “sale” cooler and saw a pair of T Bone steaks priced at $23.00.........whoa!

Even before my husband built my greenhouse (out of old windows that he had removed and replaced at the pastor’s house) I started all my seeds in the house.

This year I’m putting in even more tomatoes and peppers and the woman who owns the store down the road from me is going to buy all the maters I can supply her. She is also supplying me counter space for the jellies, mustards and preserves I make. In the county I live, I can sell anything I make or grow without any permits or licenses right from a roadside stand my husband built for me.

Yes, the garden can be (is) a lot of work - but it can also pay for itself and then some.

What until people can’t heat their homes this winter thanks to obama’s lack of energy policy, no keystone, outlawing coal, a war in the middle east because we’ve decided that we should let chaos rein and anarchy run supreme...how nice.

Tell me about it.

I know people who have EBT cards. I cannot believe they eat scallops, thumb sized shrimp and lobster every week.

Hell, I can absolutely afford that stuff and don’t eat it but every couple months.

Even then, I couldn’t care less about eating it.

has to be prepared special like paella or grilled but, by a chef who can work their magic.

I just don’t see how, if you are on EBT program, you can justify the cost of shellfish.

Yes, I've noticed the sheets are getting smaller.

No, it doesn’t threaten them as they have the EBT cards and are wholly taken care of by the State.

Always keep in mind what Royal Meeker said about minimum wage! The purpose of minimum wage was never about social justice or fairness, it was about elimination of whole sectors of people! Minimum wage, is discrimination and social engineering at its worst.

Regarding Minimum Wage:

“It is much better to enact a minimum-wage law even if it deprives these unfortunates of work… better that the state should support the inefficient wholly and prevent the multiplication of the breed than subsidize incompetence and unthrift, enabling them to bring forth more of their kind.” - Royal Meeker, U.S. Commissioner of Labor, under Woodrow Wilson

Consider those “uneducated” folks recently protesting at fastfood chains for a $15 minimum wage. We realize that kind of wage increase will not only make fastfood too expensive even for the middle class, but it also will eliminate those same folks from their jobs!

Now also consider Michele Obama’s recent comments about ‘feeding her children,’ and bring together the idea that some folks are not worth minimum wage and NEED to be taken care of WHOLLY by the State. They, liberal elites, have no worries about the price of food...except they do worry about those unhealthy middle-class masses putting a burden on their utopian dreams. You or I and the lower classes should not be eating steak, beef, etc. Instead, they think we don’t eat healthy as it is and we’re incapable of teaching our children to be healthy either.

Put all this together with a minor food crisis and they have their opportunity to put more of us in a situation where we show up on their doorstep with our hands out to be wholly taken care of by the state!

Years ago my father converted a wood burning fireplace to gas. This summer I am having it switched back to a woodburner and putting in an insert.

I am getting more scared everyday about how I am going to be able to afford the very basics! All these examples of ‘city codes’ should give anyone considering going Galt deep pause. They are not going to let you live independently from the grid.

Add onto this the recent story about the woman whose city water was cut-off, she resorted to rain barrels etc. for water and the city decided her home was no longer habitable because she didn’t have city water!

The Arizona woman who had her electric turned off and was using solar...city condemned it too.

The Florida woman who was evicted from her home for living off the grid. She lives off the grid and does not purchase municipal services such as water and electricity. They condemned her home and declared it ”unihabitable” due to International Law, even though they never entered the home to examine it. http://youtu.be/RtiI1KA8Vps

Definition of an adult: someone who has stopped growing at both ends and started growing in the middle.
