Who on FR watches "House of Cards" Series
Vanity (Netflix) | 7-23-2014 | self

Posted on 07/23/2014 2:29:52 PM PDT by C. Edmund Wright

After being told by 3 or 4 associates whom I respect that I must watch it - and after putting it off for months - I finally dug in and power watched both seasons in past couple weeks.

I was astounded, on so many fronts. This is must see TV for political junkies. I mean, anyone might like it, but the politically involved will find it fascinting, and teachable, illustrative…..

Anyone else

Addicted! Looks like Season 3 will be delayed and I’m heartbroken. Both KS and Robin whats-her-name are fantastic in their roles. Cold, hard, calculation and without souls. Hits home.

Probably no more gay than Washington is……art imitates life. This is not about Bangor Maine or Des Moines iowa.

Started watching the British version but if I finish it will spoil the American version. What a dilemma!

Yes it’s aggrevating….because we all know that’s exactly how Washington does work.

It is hard to like any of them. I almost sort of kind of liked Doug - but not totally.

As for Vikes….I also think that’ a series worth watching. I love the spiritual tension in it. And it’s very well done - altho the main character is the weakest IMO in Vikes - while the main character in Cards is amazing.

The writing was not weak….this series is a thousand times better than West Wing, which was not watchable. Must be West Wing friends who are bitter that H of Cards is so much better.

I’ve been around Washington and Washington people enough to know that yes, this rings very true. Washington is a town of 24/7 activity and constant crisis and yes, lots of pillow talk .

intersting take on why the main character starts out as majority whip. You may be onto something. I think they minimize the Speaker, and the entire Senate for that matter - but I understand a series can only tolerate a limited number of characters.

I have no doubts that Washington is gay. But I also have no desire to occupy my time watching sin inducing waste product.

I liked it.

I am really surprised it was allowed to be shown. It shows democrats as the bad guys. That is unheard of.

He’s a backroom brawler, and a cleanup man. The books discuss it a lot more overtly, both sets of TV shows really just hint at it. But basically if you’ve got yourself a dead hooker, or angry cuckold, or drug dealer who finally has figured out where he’s seen your face before, you call old FU and certain things/ people disappear. But there is a price. And if your constituents get angry about that vote, well maybe you shouldn’t have so many bad habits, chief of which being sloppy about your bad habits.

But in all 3 he’s wanting to move out of the backroom, get a prestigious gig with the new incoming government they helped win. And he gets passed over (mostly because nobody actually likes him, because who really likes their professional blackmailer), and it’s vengeance time. It’ll be interesting to see what they do for season 3, I will say they did a better job of setting up the building blocks for what the other 2 versions did with the third installment than the other 2 versions did (which is as close to spoiling things as I’ll get in public, anybody wanting more can PM me).

Maybe not, as another FReeper mentioned, the UK form of government is very different than our system.

It will just give you pause as you watch the US version, but perhaps insite.

Not I. Haven't watched even a minute.

I'll probably try the power watching like you at some point now.

I say go for it. It’s well enough done that even if they follow it will still be interesting. I binged the first season of the American one, then binged the whole British series, then read the books. Then had to wait for the second season here.

I watched the first season over about 4 evenings and was totally hooked. I watched the second season in a marathon session of 1-1/2 days. It was really depressing, however, seeing such evil people in charge of the country. I guess I’m too innocent and nice for politics....sigh. Another good show in the same vein is the since-cancelled series “Boss” with Kelsey Grammer.

An interesting show about corruption is this years episodes of “Endeavor” on PBS Masterpiece Mystery.

This is a prequel series to the John Thaw “Inspector Morse” (Morse’s first name he never wanted used was Endeavor).

It is set in the sixties at the start of his career and shows British law enforcement fighting with internal corruption. If you can take the Brit dialogue, it is outstanding.

you would be glad you watched…..I am….I’m not sure whether I “like” it or not….but I think it is incredibly teachable about why Washington cannot work, period.
