PA:Why People Carry a Gun When Answering the Door
Gun Watch ^ | 8 August, 2014 | Dean Weingarten

Numerous people have criticized homeowners  for having a gun in their hand or on their person when answering a door.   I have always maintained that it is only prudent to do so.   Home security systems can be very useful, of course.   A standoff barrier, such as my old friend, Tex Ferguson, the highly decorated combat vet and intelligence operative used, works very well, as do surveillance cameras.  Not everyone has such a system in place, or working, all the time.   In any case, surveillance and standoff systems work best when backed up by armed force.  I have reported numerous cases where armed homeowners prevailed against criminal attackers; and even a few cases where armed homeowners prevailed in court against police invaders.   There are even a couple of rare cases where police officers have shot and killed homeowners, simply because the homeowner was armed.

The following incident resulted in the death of a criminal home invader.  From the pottsmerc.com:

The incident occurred around 1:27 a.m. July 28, when Daryl Marquis Evans, 22, knocked on the door of the home and displayed a handgun when the front door was opened by a 29-year-old resident, according to the press release. Police later determined Evans was carrying a Taurus PT 911 9mm handgun. The resident was also armed, with a .40-caliber Smith and Wesson in his waistband, which he brought with him to answer the door due to the late hour, the district attorney’s office said.
The homeowner made the evaluation that defense instructors suggest.  "Does this attacker intend to kill or severely injure me, even if I comply?"
“Based on Evans’ appearance and actions, the resident feared that Evans was going to kill him. The resident pulled his .40 caliber, Smith & Wesson semi-automatic handgun from beneath his shirt and fired (6) shots striking Evans in the chest, pelvis and the leg,” the press release states.
Action beats reaction.  Evans already had a long criminal history at age 22.  One has to wonder how many crimes the homeowner  prevented by acting to preserve his own life.

The better question is “Why wouldn’t you carry a gun when opening the door?”

Yes. There’s supposedly also a scam by limo drivers who pick people up (to drive them to the airport) at their homes.

What is a “standoff barrier”? A google search didn't come up with anything.

Police advice in my area is to not open the door for anybody unless you positively know who they are in advance.

Tell you a story..............

I work a regular job..12 hour shifts. Thus I'm home 4 days a week....working another job. But I don't punch a time clock here.

A few months ago....I saw an older guy 30's or so...midday crossing my lawn. I met him at my front door...with my pistol within reach. He was surprised...then proceeded to tell me he wanted to trim my trees...I told him no thanks. Didn't need that....he gives me a goofy looking card.

He heads back to where he came...around the back of my house. I pocket my pistol and go out the back door.....My neighbors young daughter comes out from across the street..Meanwhile I see this guy is driving an older Jaguar 4 door...with at least 3 guy's in it..He continues walking down the street...and goes to another house. Then my neighbor's kid tells me he knocked on her bedroom window...while she was going to take a shower.

I proceeded post haste...to him..telling him he needed to leave NOW..and I was calling the police. He left fast..I was very pissed....

Turned out he was a crook..NO CHIT!!! Ha!!

I got two dogs...and...well, I had a lot of guns once. But they all got lost.

I live in the country and can see cars coming down the driveway. During the day, I walk out and meet them in the driveway with a holstered gun. By the way some of them acted, I could tell they were up to no good.

Friends and family know that they are supposed to call me before they “stop by.”

If anyone does make it to the door, I have other family members also armed and in hiding. We have trained.

But they must walk past the sign that says, “Trespassers will be shot. Survivors will be shot again.”

I like guns, but I also like knives, as being very complementary to guns. But the situational problem with a door greeting needs some thought, even brainstorming.

Off the top of my head, I can imagine three sets of variables here. First of all, day or night. Second is the invader planning to rush you or stand off with a gun. And third is are they alone, or do they have hidden confederates ready to invade once they are in.

Home security systems can be very useful, of course.
++++++++
They sure are good at scaring off all those white burglars that are terrorizing neighborhoods across the country. /s

As I am always carrying (even when home), I am always armed.

Actually, they are good for the worst of the worst too.

We have a pretty good system..

Motion sensor lights around the house (thugs are like cockroaches; they do not like the light of day).

Cameras recording 24/7 and taping all motion, also which can be accessed via smart phone.

Motion sensors on the gun safe tied directly to the police.

Motion sensors on every floor of the house.

A screen system on the windows which has a wires running through it, so that if the screen is cut, it will trip the alarm.

And other things I will not post publicly.

But if someone gets through all of that.....then they get to meet me who carries 24/7.

Good luck Mr. Thug.

I always look out my window when someone knocks at the door.

The only time I had my gun in hand when answering the door was because someone was knocking on it at two a.m. Turned out to be a woman who apparently had the wrong house (she was shocked to see me)...though why she was knocking on anyone’s door at that hour is beyond me.
