Back in October last year Russell Brand made waves by urging people to incite revolution by not voting. He admitted in an interview with Jeremy Paxman that he had never voted, and never intended to, but went on to exhort people not to vote, claiming that democracy needed to be swept away. Things might be slightly more complex now.

The English should say good riddance to them.

Scotland is a PC Socialist dystopia.

I was in Scotland on 9/11/2001.

I remember well the universal sentiment was that the burning towers were terrible but it was all our fault and we should just contemplate our sins and do nothing to retaliate or further inflame Islam.

“...various unnamed “financial gurus” have been talking down this referendum as being “foolish” because of all the various loose financial ends left by severing ties with England.”

Those same people were mouthing many of the same things back during the Quebec independence referendum in 1995.

The thing that I always wonder about this is, so what if they vote for independence. So did Virginia regarding the US.

That was only act one.

Yes.

Scot socialists want to leave leave a socialist UK to (eventually) join a MORE socialist Europe or create an EVEN MORE socialist independent Scotland.

Until the Scots realize socialism is evil it matters little what they do.

An independent Scotland would move the EU a bit to the left, and make it more likely that the relatively right-leaning UK would leave the EU, when its vote comes up in 2017.

The referendum question reads:
"Should Scotland be an independent country?"

Should does not mandate. It implies a preference for a proposed future situation, e.g., “Should you brush your teeth tomorrow morning?” is not the same as “Will you brush your teeth tomorrow morning?”.

If YES prevails, will a second referendum be necessary to implement the expressed opinion?

>>>An independent Scotland would move the EU a bit to the left, and...

the EU would demand tribute from the North Sea oil.

Maybe the whole EU would implode.

Probably early evening Eastern US time.

At least a good indication. Ballots from say Bressay, the Hebrides will take some time.

Scotland almost entirely votes for Socialist candidates in Parliament. The SNP is socialist. If Scotland wants to wreck their own country with Socialist rule, that’s fine with me, but let’s not pretend that a “Yes” vote would be good for Scotland.

That is one possibility. Things like that have happened in many newly independent countries, usually where there aren't stable constitutional and democratic traditions: Algeria, Zimbabwe, Ghana, etc.

The other possibility is that the party system in a newly independent country may move back to the center. It's no longer a fight against foreign bureaucracy or foreign money or foreign media. People start to think of the government, the economy, and the media as their own. So, for example, after Ireland got self-rule a lot of the radicalism dissipated, and a century later they look a lot like Britain.

Something similar happened with our own revolution. It wasn't government or taxes per se that we were revolting against, but a government overseas imposing taxes on us without our consent. When we got independence and representation, we taxed ourselves more than the British dared to.

So there's at least the possibility that an independent Scotland will develop a viable conservative (if not Conservative) party and government in the future when politics is no longer a matter of getting back at the Sassenachs.

I read an article that noted that the last couple of official election results announcements happened the next morning between 6am and 7am. That would be 1-2am Eastern US time tonight.

Those projections are based on traditional polling methodology. Which may in fact turn out to be accurate. But this referendum is open to 16 and 17 year olds and I’ve got a sneaking feeling that the polls may not reflect what’s going to happen. The passion is all on one side and the “No” campaign has been so pathetic as to make the usual Republican effort over here look slick. We should know by this evening, or around 9:00 PM EST (2:00 AM GMT).
