Repost: Ebola: Does It Matter?

Despite the best efforts of the World Health Organization and Doctors Without Borders, Ebola is expected to rage on in West Africa for another 12-18 months, with 20,000 cases predicted. Without coordination of relief efforts, the ability to contain the disease is limited and has been labeled a “failure” to date. Countries are sending supplies and equipment in piecemeal fashion. The U.S., for example, is setting up a 25 bed hospital for its part. Unfortunately, it’s far too little to make a dent in the epidemic.

It’s difficult for a person in a developed country to believe that medical systems, economies, even governments, might fail as a result of a virus. The average U.S. citizen suffers from what we call “Normalcy Bias”. This is the tendency to be believe that, since things have been just fine, everything will always remain so. This is foolhardy thinking at best, and dangerous thinking at worst. One wonders what the effect of normalcy bias was in 1918 when the Spanish Flu hit America.

Funny thing I was in a post war with one of FR's Ebola experts and he actually got so angry with me over posting this Spanish Flu Death chart showing the weekly epidemic rate that he reported me to the admin!

I got so much grief over posting this but here goes again:

Between the diseases that the Obama administration allowed to cross our borders and Ebola outbreak growing or many be it will be one of the large numbers of pots starting to boil the chances of something leading to a SHTF event are at a height and the chances of quarantines being imposed have to be considered. In fact it may get to a point in which a wise person will impose a quarantine on their family even if health officials don’t.

There are more than a few FReepers who like to point out how silly they see preparing for a ‘Mad Max’ situation is, but what if it isn’t ‘Mad Max’? What if it is something as simple as being able to shelter in place for 30-60 days while an outbreak runs its course? Could you make it through such a quarantine self imposed or mandator with what you have in your home? If you haven’t thought about it maybe its time.

It is your choice you can prep or you can stand around on a bridge waiting for FEMA to bring you a bottle of water, a MRE, a warm blanket and a kiss for your boo-boo and maybe you can even get your picture as you stand there on the national news.

The world is dry tinder just awaiting the right spark.

So listen to what the bible says: A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it. NIV Proverbs 22:3

Selco covers this in this article many times people just can not except that a breakdown is occurring even as they watch it happening before their eyes. Why don’t they realize it? It’s caused by a condition called ‘Normalcy Bias’ a mental state people enter when facing a disaster.

It causes people to underestimate both the possibility of a disaster occurring and its possible effects. This often results in situations where people fail to adequately prepare for a disaster, and on a larger scale, the failure of governments to include the populace in its disaster preparations. The assumption that is made in the case of the normalcy bias is that since a disaster never has occurred then it never will occur. It also results in the inability of people to cope with a disaster once it occurs. People with a normalcy bias have difficulties reacting to something they have not experienced before. People also tend to interpret warnings in the most optimistic way possible, seizing on any ambiguities to infer a less serious situation.

A good article on ‘Normalcy Bias’ is on our own ChocChipCookies Blog The Survival Mom:

http://thesurvivalmom.com/2010/12/29/normalcy-bias/

You either prepare and stand on your own beholden to no one or you become dependent on others to provide your basic needs and become their ‘serf’. Me I don’t want to be beholden to anyone for providing what is needed for me and mine. I certainly don’t want to have to kiss some ‘gubberment’ third class bureaucratic to try and coax some help from them, I don’t want some ‘jack booted’ thug herding me in line and telling me where to stand, sit, eat or sleep. And last but not least I don’t want to be shut up in with a bunch of ‘zombies’ and have to worry about not only trying to get basic necessities but having to fight to keep what I manage to get.

Just getting started or an old hand you might find my Preparedness Manual helpful. You can download the manual at:

http://tomeaker.com/kart/Preparedness1j.pdf NOTE! THIS IS A FREE DOWNLOAD. I DO NOT MAKE ONE CENT OFF MY PREPAREDNESS MANUAL!

For those of you who haven’t started already it’s time to prepare almost past time maybe. You needed to be stocking up on food guns, ammo, basic household supplies like soap, papergoods, cleaning supplies, good sturdy clothes including extra socks, underwear and extra shoes and boots, cash (I myself have been putting up change for the past few years both for the metal content and the fact that using change places to make what purchases you can will move you down the the list of possible marks during shtf), tools, things you buy everyday start buying two and put one up.

As the LDS say “When the emergency is upon us the time for preparedness has past.”

Again I like to recomend FReeper’s ChocoChipCookie Blog The Survival Mom (Please Blog Police let this one slide!) Where you can get lots of useful information like:

And More

Any H2O2 fans out there? I’m wondering about its effectiveness fighting the disease. We’ve increased our vitamins and probiotics too.

H202 won't help with Ebola. It will help with sanitation and minors wounds. The best “treatment” is not to contact the virus in the first place. Basic quarantine and sanitary practices will serve you better. If you tangle with Ebola your in God's hands

I agree; I intend to just hunker down in an out of the way place and end up having enough to get me though the chaos.

Talking about fighting Ebola with vitamins, etc. makes as much sense as discussing fighting a swat team with a 12 gauge shot gun.

The only way to deal with Ebola is self quarantine until it burns out. I figure when you have to go to ground, you need at least 6 months and more likely a year supply of everything you will need.

If you are planning to “just go out for a gallon of milk” just remind yourself of how many people you will have to deal with to buy that gallon of milk. Good Luck to you.

Only real decision to make at this point is deciding just when it is time to pull the plug and drop out.

Been waiting for this thread. Before the hangnail crowd gets here, would appreciate those planning on sheltering in place, etc. just what is their tipping point.

We have the one case in a major city now. Will it be the first case in your state, your city, your block?

Serious question looking for serious replys.

FYI....Well Ebola is here now...

....they found it in a patient at a Dallas Hospital. Who had flown here from Liberia or one of the nations there. Tested positive.

Now the hunt for all he had been in contact with recently.
Which one wonders who those people are in contact with..etc etc.

Thanks for your post...I’ve been following this case in Dallas today....it is of no comfort to me they have a patient who brought it in after flying from an invested area over there.

Quite different then bringing an infected person here, which is bad enough, but this man has been in contact with other people “after” he landed and was walking around for some time before showing symptoms.

Sept. 24 — Begins having symptoms
Sept. 26 — Seeks medical care
Sept. 28— Hospitalized and put in isolation
Sept. 30— Tests positive for Ebola

They’re saying the family members (”a handful”) are being closely watched and will be for the period of time they determine to clear.

Also that he was tested ‘negative for fever in Liberia’ before flight..which is the line of defense they’re using before flights.

They’re also saying he would not have infected any on the flight.....for he had to have symptoms for it to spread.

The tipping point for me is when medical staff start falling ill in multiple locations (lets just say ten locations). When the staff suffer the burden increases and the not so highly trained start stepping up and the tail spin begins. If medical staff start becoming ill in a few states and travel has not been locked down; I am going to utilize my ability to work from home 100% and monitor the best I can.

A side note. This is a VERY bad time for a confirmed ebola patient on U.S. soil. Think about it for a minute, if ebola reaches north in this country with winter coming supplies are going to run short quick as I would expect some sort of lock down. Famine. Many (and I do mean many) are NOT ready to hunker down for eight months until they can grow a crop; even if they could.
