Common Core Question Asks: "There are 25 Sheep and 5 Dogs in a Flock. How Old is the Shepherd?"

In an intentional attempt to study and potentially confuse children, children were asked "There are 25 sheep and 5 dogs in a flock. How old is the shepherd?" Why might you ask this supposedly common-core aligned question?

According to the teachers who created this problem, it is to teach students that they must:

1. Explain the meaning of a problem.

2. Plan a solution pathway rather than simply jumping into a solution attempt.

3. Continually ask themselves, "Does this make sense?"

This question has actually been researched for years, and is still being asked to children. Today, however, it is now considered aligned with the common core because it forces children to think about their strategies in answering questions.

So, how did students actually answer the question? As expected, with a great amount of confusion: Common Core Math

So, do pray tell, what is the answer to this question that makes some sense?

The answer they're looking for, I believe, is that there isn't enough information to attempt an answer. In other words, actual critical thinking.

Before solving the problem one should ask if the shepherd is a muzzie.

With 5 dogs guarding 25 sheep, you don’t need a shepherd. Shepherds are soooo last century. Today’s sheep ranchers keep sheep in pens.

Answering that the shepherd died last week of Ebola would get you put on 2 weeks suspension.

You Don’t bury survivors.

Sure you do.

Just not right away.

Where did they bury the survivors of the great 1906 San Francisco earthquake?

The survivors are buried on the rooftop, next to the rooster’s egg.

“This makes no sense. How old is the shepherd. How is a child supposed to know.”

That’s the point: the child needs to learn that some questions DON’T make sense, and don’t have enough relevant information to answer (or are even such a non-sequitur that it’s just straight-up nonsense). After being hammered with “given this information, answer the question” a kid needs be reminded that sometimes there isn’t one.

HOWEVER ... methinks this is yet another example of Common Core trying to instill advanced skills where there isn’t enough basics to grasp ‘em. Yes, a student needs to understand that sometimes there isn’t enough information to answer a question, and that the information provided may be irrelevant, and that it’s OK to say “given X we cannot answer Y”. CC is notorious for requiring EXACT answers, adhering precisely to a given process to the abject exclusion of other sensible answers & paths thereto; what was the “correct” answer to such a “there isn’t an answer” question? are other correct but different answers deemed “wrong”? is there any credit given to valiant attempts to solve the unsolvable (the sheep-breeding-cycle answer was surprisingly insightful)? what if someone DID manage to answer the question after all? was this question presented abruptly (answers indicate it was), or was there a sensible introduction of the concept of incomplete information?

There is no correct answer to that question.

It is, however, a perfect example of the way a liberal thinks, bringing in irrelevant facts (or fictions), and then coming to the desired conclusion.

Which must be something along the line of: “Obama rocks”, or “You're a racist”, or perhaps, “All men are rapists”>

Answer:

You are too stupid to answer this question.
You can not take care of, or think for yourself .
You must have others , who are superior to you, take care of you, and tell you what to think and do.
Vote democrat- it's your only hope.
