Fran Tarkenton rips Robert Griffin III: 'He will never make it'
CBS Sports ^ | December 5, 2014 | Josh Katzowitz

If Hall of Fame quarterback Fran Tarkenton doesn't think much of your abilities as an NFL quarterback, he has no problem speaking his mind.

A.J. McCarron knows all about this. As does Tim Tebow and, yep, Brett Favre. And so does Robert Griffin III and Mike Shanahan, especially after Tarkenton went negative after the Redskins lost their 2012 playoff game to the Seahawks.

Now, during an interview with theMMQB.com's Jenny Vrentas, Tarkenton took another crack at Griffin, who's lost his starting Redskins job to Colt McCoy and who very well could be off the team before 2015.

Tarketon says he proclaimed two years ago that Griffin wouldn't make it, and one big reason why is because of the quarterback's attitude.

"He came into the league with an arrogance," Tarkenton said. "He goes into Washington, which is the worst place for him to go. They have been so hungry for a quarterback and for winning. They worshipped him. Here's RG3; he's our savior, he's our guy. His father gets involved and is in the locker room -- I have never seen a father in a locker room on Sundays. The owner, Dan Snyder, adopts him and becomes his best friend. So RG3, at 21, 22, thought he was Jesus, right? And he was making pontifical statements about how he approached the game. I was listening to him the offseason after his rookie year, which was not a bad year, and I'm saying, 'Holy [expletive], this guy is out of control with his ego.' That was the first sign you saw that he lacked leadership."(continued)

I remember this guy was supposed to be the 2nd coming, the hype was incredible. He had all of the ‘off-the-field’ tools, and the media positively loved him ..... Then when it came time to actually perform, he just fell flat.

As for RG3, he also had these same problems, but he did have some injuries that hurt his playing style.

In the former, I was speaking of 0bama.

The parallels are striking!

I would say this....if he’d been drafted by Kansas City or Seattle...he would have had lesser pressure, and a season or two to blend in. His style might have developed, and his lack of leadership wouldn’t be noticed today. I would say now...he’ll move onto another club....maybe Dallas, and work his way back or else totally fail. I would say that thirty percent of the college guys drafted and signed....never get past the third season of the NFL. He might be one of those guys in the end.

I live in Seattle so I see a lot of media coverage on Wilson. I have never heard anyone - current or former teammate, opponent, or coach - say anything negative about him. And perhaps more tellingly, I've never heard him say a bad word about anything or anybody. He, along with every other Seahawk - especially Pete Carroll - are absolutely beloved in this town. For a NFL fan, this time and place are where it's at. And don't even get me started on Beast Mode...

I live in Seattle too, so am biased on Wilson of course. But it seems like all of these guys seem pretty decent, doing charity, etc. (Lynch has his football camp down in Compton, etc.)

I like the one video that promotes Children’s Hospital and Wilson’s support. The nurses saw him the first time and thought “that’s nice” and that would be the end of it. But every week (Mon. or Tues.) he shows up for awhile and meets with the kids.

“attitude”???....like what qb in the nfl doesn’t have a big attitude.....
*******************************
Tony Romo, for one. Very soft spoken and always gives credit to his team mates; O linemen, receivers and defense. I’ve never heard him saying anything egotistic. He shows class.

Another college QB who became a great receiver. Hines Ward.

Ward is a very interesting player when it comes to assessing just what kind of NFL player he was. True, he played some QB at Georgia (he threw for +400 yards in a bowl game) but really didn’t play QB after his sophmore year. But he played running back and he played wide receiver.
Every NFL team looked at him like, what is he?
Not very fast, not very big, certainly did not have the physical tools to be considered a pro quarterback prospect.
Pittsburgh took him in the 3rd round (bit of a roll of the dice) and he started on special teams.....and he started to absolutely blow people up.
Then he became a situational WR...and started blowing people up in the run game...and at the same time began to find his game as a WR, namely, intermediate routes and great in the red zone.
It was rare for essentially a slot receiver to set the physical tone for a 2x Super Bowl champion.
I think he makes the H.O.F.....maybe not the first couple of attempts but I think he will make it.
Rare player for sure.

Bob is a good kid. He was thrown into a tumultuous situation in DC and was used to just win a few games, not to build a franchise. The problem with Bob is not his attitude, or his talent but the owner of the franchise. If Bob was allowed to develop and learn the speed of the game before there was pressure on him to win, he would be much better. His injuries were a product of inexperience and a management team’s (led by Snyder) desire for an immediate return on his investment. The fans would have accepted the three year process of building a team around him as long as there was progress. Most would have been okay with the king’s ransom they paid for him too because of the importance of the franchise QB, but their “eye’s got big” when they saw teams weren’t adjusting to read option and tried to take advantage of it instead of taking the long view.
He’s not perfect, but the talent is there.

Agree, Ward had the best hands I ever saw, like they were coated with glue. He also took huge hits time after time over the middle and always jumped up smiling. Later in his career, he was getting a bad rap for dirty hits because he was so physical. Amazing talent from Forest ParK, GA.

That is what the PATS tried to do with Tebow.
Remember this was when Gronkowski was still hurt and Amendola was Ok at best in the tight end position.
Tebow can not catch. He catches as well as he throws.

RG3 May do fine in a couple of years if given a chance to heal and mature. However, keep in mind we are lucky enough to be watching the two best quarterbacks ever to play the game: Brady and Peyton Manning. Everyone else in coming years will be compared to them.

Yep. Old sergeant once told me “Attitude is everything, positive attitude, positive results. Crappy attitude, crappy results, every single time.”

Always tried to follow his advice.

Agree with you, and many points in that blog. Particularly:
“NFL films does not actually make this footage available, and most of what it shows are such extreme close-ups that it is impenetrable from a strategy perspective.”

The NFL, a lot of the college game, I have found to be almost UNWATCHABLE because of the camera angles and close-ups. When I want to see how a guy gets up from a slobberknocking tackle - o no! - I get to see some player’s sweaty face. It’s infuriating.

Now, it might be that blogger’s opinion: that the-powers-that-be want to keep their strategies secret...that’s almost more pleasant to consider than what I believe:
Consider who is in the director’s chair, calling for those close-ups.
Are they football-types, do you think?...or theater-types?
Yah...and just *who* do you think populates the theater departments? See where I’m going here? Yah, the *types* who LIKE seeing such close-ups.
(sorry to bring that idea to you - it’s disgusting, but...like I said, almost unwatchable)

I like to follow those offenses that are NOT ‘fundamentally flawed’, like the Triple Option that Ga. Tech and all of the Service Academies run ( got to see Navy against TX State down in San Marcos, and even being there, I STILL had trouble following the ball. I love that!) - it beats the heck out of watching Brady standing around like a dang statue, throwing dink and dunk stuff all night...
b-o-r-i-n-g.

You might enjoy this guy’s blog:
http://coachwyatt.com/

He’s been teaching the Double Wing for many years, and talk about thinking out-of-the-box, there it is!
One of his coaches, Pete Porcelli, won a few semi-pro championships with the DW (up in New York state area IIRC)
I found a HS team that uses it close to me, you maybe could find one close by to you - it’s fun to watch, and even more fun to sit near the opposition parents, and listen to them ask each other; “What the heck is THAT?” lol!

BTW, almost everyone is wrong about where the Wildcat got started:
http://www.coachwyatt.com/wildcat.html

I’m surprised and disappointed that RG is getting the ‘arrogant’-label. I thought he was a ‘character guy’, with his folks providing the Army discipline & all. Thought he had a more down-to-earth quality. What do I know?
:shrugs:

That’s the story here in Seattle, true or not. One reason it’s thought true is because Tate, when the news first broke, made a big announcement that he wasn’t banging Wilson’s wife, when no one had even mentioned his name. Then there’s the trade - to many it didn’t make sense that a leading receiver on a team that had just won the SB would be so eager to get out of town...
