Marco Rubio Goes Full Nutjob on Cuba Announcement [Zot!]
Liberty Briefing ^ | 12/18/2014 | Jeff Siegel

Posted on 12/18/2014 9:14:32 AM PST by LibertarianTreehugger

On the rare occasion I find myself in agreement with President Obama, I get nervous.

It just feels like a setup. Like someone's going to pull the rug out from under me at any moment.

But right now, I have to admit, I was very pleased to hear the news that the U.S. and Cuba are moving to normalize relations.

So the 3 or 2 and a half Cuban Senators don’t like this deal. Says a lot.

I would not be against normalization except that it is by this guy without any input from Congress. Somehow this is going to hurt the USA real bad. Obama wouldn’t do it were there not some harm to US involved. There is some other agreement here that we have not heard about. Or perhaps this is a stepping stone to “normalization” with Iran and then North Korea.

On Fox tonight, they were saying that maybe the "something more than meets the eye" could be closing Gitmo, Kelly File I think had it. Could be. Then, we just lose in this whole thing. We already lost on this I say.

This reminds me of a line from Scarface, the customs officer says “Castro ———ed all over us” per in that movie, it’s the Mariel Boatlift.

I take exception to your comments here. Cuba is a gulag and we’re supposed to just overlook that fact ? Do you share the same opinion regarding relations with North Korea ?

"Raise your hand if you even thought about Cuba in the past 10 years until Obama announced this policy change."

I and my Cuban-American wife think of and talk about Cuba every day and have for the last 30 years. I could tell you stories about her life in Cuba that would curl your toes. She still has family in Cuba who are STILL suffering after 50 years.

The Cuban-American community is incensed at Obemba's move to 'normalize' relations with a despot, but then, he is much like a despot himself.

I was in the fleet for the Cuban Missile Crisis blockade. We were also patrolling offshore for the Bay of Pigs. Guantanamo Bay is the hottest, most stifling, energy-sapping atmosphere/environment on the planet.

How many times have YOU been to Cuba?

Great Plan. /SARC

Now, specifically how are you going to implement this "plan".

The devil is in the details, lets hear the details.

“Do you share the same opinion regarding relations with North Korea?”

That was my thought following this thread. Once Fidel and his communism has fallen - then go in there and help them redevelop and show them how civilized people can improve things and make a buck.

It is too bad IMHO that the U.S. didn’t do more in Russia after the fall to bring investment and capitalism to them. Of course it is so corrupt over there (and Cuba too I imagine) - what American firm wants to take that risk.

There’s always been Western investment and trade with Russia.

US government trade sanctions don’t mean much to transnational financial elites, when goods and money can easily move from country to country.

Since 1991 American and other Western big business and big capital has been quite involved in Russian trade and finance.

Sanctions don’t work. Blacklisting communist dictators and not helping empowering them with our cash works great. Because we then, by definition, don’t wmpower them. If any other country wants to, we should then view them through that prism.

But if you want the Trumps and the IBMs and the Sean Penn’s of America to help contribute to human oppression, be my guest. America is under no obligation to save Cuba. That is the obligation of Cubans. But id we contribute to the wellbeing of their oppressors, we become their oppressors.

We opened China. More people kill themselves there now than at any point in history. Then there’s how our money rebuilt their military which now threatens the entire area including Japan. Yup. Smooth move Exlax. Lets all back Jimmy Carter era policies on Cuba because God personally knows that Liberals are most often correct on foreign policy decisions and ALWAYS have the best intentions for those people involved, and our country at heart.

At some point I can only hope someone here sees how FR is getting turned into a DNC/RNC propagands conduit and acts to correct it.

The devil is in the details, lets hear the details.

What were the details with the Declaration of Independence? Freedom and Liberty is the answer. A planned economy has lots of details. But it never worked.

Try reading Capitalism and Freedom. That has all the 'details'

It’s not like there was a spy ring from Cuba found in the US and caught, prosecuted and sentenced in the last 15 years or anything...

Oh, wait.....

Great Leap Forward, Cultural Revolution, takeover of Tibet. I don't agree with this point.

Sure he did. The govt there still does. Now with our money funding it. Now, there are more Chinese that at any point killing THEMSELVES rather than be subjects to slavery. Gotta have someone make all that exportable product for cheap though.

One does not nullify the other. Not sure what you find ignorable there. It is afterall factual. Not sure why you hate the Cubans to want to subject them to that. Not sure why you want Las Vegas turned into a ghost town to fund it.

Very sure your priorities are pretty screwed up though.

One has to wonder why China spends fortunes slamming the lid down every time a story about Foxxcon or another magafactory dorm suffers a rash of suicides. Considering how strictly controlled their media is it sure seems to me lots of people are dying. And then there’s the stories of suicides coming from the garbge recycling towns where disease is making life so unendurable that people are killing themselves. And there’s the regular suicide stories from their financial sector. And their government sector...

The point is that it’s our money that funds it all. It’s our ‘opening’ (another word for legal funding of dictators) communist markets with NO control whatsoever over their communist governments. Our cash goes to communism, not to suffering people whose lives get more ‘suffering’ by the dollar.

I am all for opening those markets. Legitimately. AFTER they end their communist governments. Not before.

I am not saying sanctions work, but I don't see a compelling reason to lift them.

It is insanity to continue to do things that don't work or add value.

This is Socialist mantra - "It will work. We just haven't done it right"
