What does everyone think of a music play-off bracket-type poll for best songs of the '80s?
That is on my SVR playlist, pretty much his entire catalog is, but I cut my two favorites down to Texas Flood and Couldn't Stand the Weather. Gotta draw a line somewhere no matter how hard it is....
If you like Jonny, check him out with Joss Stone and Herbie Hancock

Excellent, thanks.
You familiar with Kenny Wayne Sheppard?

I lived in Austin a long time and I saw SRV do this sound check routine more than once, thought you might enjoy if you’ve never seen it.

Dang, but that’s better than most at the top of their performance. What a talent.
I am familiar with KWS.
I've watched that clip of SRV a number of times.
I wish they would have held the focal point so that you could watch his hands better.
I have a wide range of musical interests. Always enjoy a good guitar technician, usually in just about any genre.
Also, in the genre of SRV, KWS and Jonny Lang, there was Jeff Healey.
Most people know him strictly from the movie Road House. But he was more than just someone who had a bit in a movie.
Shame he's gone.
Back to KWS, he kind of reminded me of Robin Trower https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wzcteihsckw
Thanks, never given Trower much thought but from that clip I should have and will explore more.
Quite agree about Healey.
Another I miss is Randy California. Saw him live only once and was impressed.
I don’t have enough understanding of a good technician, my music talents are nil so I pretty much I know what I like and I like it.
I’ll leave you with what is probably my favorite bit ever: Albert King and SRV. I never met SRV so it’s hard to say for sure but he seemed to be a nice guy and I read some respect in how he looked at King when he was playing. That impresses me.
Kings style of play just blew my mind not only from the sound but how he did it. Maybe it’s not that big of a deal but a flying V upside down left handed and maybe detuned for loose strings. Or something.

Ah, sorry, this is the video I was really trying to find:

King and SRV Born Under a Bad Sign.
Some 80’s favorites of mine I haven’t seen mentioned:
“Along Comes a Woman” - Chicago
“Manic Monday” - The Bangles
“Stray Cat Strut” - Stray Cats
“Obsession” - (?)
“Electric Youth” - Debbie Gibson
Plus, no 80’s list would be complete without Michael Jackson and Madonna on it, probably multiple times, regardless of anyone’s personal preferences.
Besides Prince, I would say Rock the Casbah, Legs and Fast Car definitely made it big. That’s without checking official charts.
Good examples.
OK, I think I will try to set up something this week and ping many of you. Anyone is welcome, but I’ll start with pings.
The first part should be taking the #7 songs of each year of the decade and paring that down to 4 to make 64 for the starting brackets.
Fleetwood Mac & Pink Floyd, two groups had strong music in the 80’s. Especially in the early 80’s. And for a solo artist, Grace Jones: her “Slave to the Rhythm” Love that video still.
