Former Army Ranger: US Should Execute Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl

A former U.S. Army Ranger sniper and author of a best-selling book about his combat tour in Afghanistan said yesterday that Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl should be executed if found guilty of deserting his unit in 2009.

“I think he should definitely be put to death,” said Nicholas “Irv” Irving, the author (with Gray Brozek) of The Reaper: Autobiography of One of the Deadliest Special Ops Snipers, said on this writer’s radio show. “He’s given a lot of information to the enemy and he should pay the price.”

Since being released last year, Bergdahl has received two promotions and about $300,000 in back pay. He currently has a desk job at an Army base in Texas.

“They called him an honorable soldier,” Irving said. “No, I don’t agree with that.”

Bergdahl spent five years with the Taliban before being released last year in exchange for the release of five prisoners from Guantanamo Bay. The Pentagon has confirmed that six soldiers died in military operations searching for Bergdahl after he left his unit without permission.

> The real issue is that Obama released 5 major terrorists that are active against the US and used Bergdahl as the excuse to do it.

Treason. Plain as day.

>The longer the conviction is delayed and the RIGHT sentence is not carried out, the less effectual the system seems to be.<

.
He can be the target of a Jihadi “rescue” mission as long as he is kept in captivity.

Oh, please. Of the thousands of WWII deserters only one was executed for desertion only, Eddie Slovik. There have been no executions since for desertion only.

This guy is a dirtbag who deserves to be put away for a very long time.

Once again...he’s NOT YET A DESERTER. He was not classed as a deserter or AWOL, he was classed as “captured” or some such. We don’t send good soldiers after deserters in wartime. Whether he did in fact desert will be determined either by a general court martial panel or by his own guilty plea.

Punishment is authorized under Article 15 (which I think is what you meant - Art 31 is the “Miranda” part of the UCMJ), including forfeiture of a certain amount of pay and loss of stripes. That’s a punishment. Bergdahl hasn’t yet undergone a proceeding at which punishment is authorized. When he does, assuming a conviction, he’ll lose pay and allowances. I suppose there’s some remote possibility of a recoupment action after conviction for desertion, but I haven’t seen it in my 29 years and change active and reserve. 11 more months, maybe it’ll come to pass.

Remember that he was receiving hazard/combat pay at the time, which really ups the bottom line.

“We don’t send good soldiers after deserters in wartime.”

Tell that to his fellow soldiers and to the families that lost loved ones looking for him. EVERYONE knew from the beginning that there was a high likelihood that he deserted his post and simply walked away. And there was an investigation that began soon after he returned. Once again, the military does NOT automatically give out back pay to potential deserters. If he has been given the money, then it was because an Obama bootlicker ordered it.

You seem determined to be obtuse about the facts of military pay. I don’t have anything else to say.

And you seem obtuse about the facts of the UCMJ. Deserters and those under investigation for desertion do not get back pay until cleared!

Plus he got some type of POW pay which also ups it.

What he should get and what he will get are two different things. I agree with the execute side. Sadly it’s now a political rather than a military justice issue.

As an Air Force JAG with 29 years and one month of active and reserve duty and 70 courts martial tried to a member verdict on both sides of the table, I’m pretty comfortable with my knowledge of the UCMJ.

So you know for a fact that those suspected of desertion are given years of back pay as a general rule?

.how’s the missus?

Had a little setback last night. But, we are making slow progress to health. Thanks for asking!

To this thread - People, God gave us brains with which to think. Our strong feelings and emotions do not substitute for dealing in the FACTS.

There's plenty that stinks to high heaven with how this case unfolded from the get go. When someone comes on to explain the situation as it IS, not as we wish it were, listen, think and learn.

The problem is, he should have been charged immediately, in order to stop promotions and limit or stop backpay.
