I tend to be more of a believer in directed evolution because as you point out, humans stand out among all the species on the planet.

While the great apes are amazingly advanced, they don’t show any sign of ever becoming more than they are and haven’t changed at all since well before there were modern humans.

The theory of evolution requires us to believe that, if there was an evolutionary advantage to us getting food out of the ocean, it’d be possible for us to adapt into beings that could jump into the ocean and breathe water in search of resources.

In essence, that’s how the theory of evolution worked from the point of view of the first fish to leave water in search of food on land. That fish had never experienced open air before and yet was able to breathe out of water.
