The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is recognizing Andreas Guenter Lubitz with inclusion in the prestigious FAA Airmen Certification Database.
The database, which appears on the agency's website at www.faa.gov, names Lubitz and other certified pilots who have met or exceeded the high educational, licensing and medical standards established by the FAA.
Pilot certification standards have evolved over time in an attempt to reduce pilot errors that lead to fatal crashes. FAA standards, which are set in consultation with the aviation industry and the public, are among the highest in the world.
Transportation safety experts strongly recommend against flying with an uncertified pilot. FAA pilot certification can be the difference between a safe flight and one that ends in tragedy.
The FAA recently announced that is it increasing the qualification requirements for co-pilots who fly for U.S. passenger and cargo airlines. These requirements mandate additional minimum flight time and training, as well as aircraft specific training.
"Safety will be my overriding priority as Secretary, so I am especially pleased to mark my first week by announcing a rule that will help us maintain our unparalleled safety record," said Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx in a press release. "We owe it to the traveling public to have only the most qualified and best trained pilots."

Either things have changed or something doesn’t make sense. Back when I flew I really wanted to get my ATP but because of my eyesight I could only get a 3rd class medical - which locked me out of ATP. I guess they’ve changed the rules?

They pull data from the FAA Airman Certification database and generate these pages for any pilot. Do a search for the name of any pilot you know and they will have such a page.

This guy had a foreign-based restricted Private cert and 3rd Class FAA medical. Probably did some flying for fun when he visited the US.

But it was funny in an ironic way.
Strange, I just looked for myself and the search came back negative. While I have not flown in a while, it is my understanding that the pilot's license does NOT expire.
Medical's expire, as do Biennials, but not Pilot's Licenses, last time I checked.

I call BS. Seems to me this German was flying around Europe.
Credentials can be stolen. If no crew member knew the copilot by sight, perhaps the copilot was killed & his ID stolen.
Good Lord. . .met or exceeded the standards is not being lauded by the FAA. . .means he is licensed.
It's not that they're being stupid or incompetent, but just ignorant of the basics concerning aviation. They don't know what they don't know.
That's why I'm always skeptical of any news reports on subjects that are outside my area of expertise.
With 600 hrs he can be an FAA rated commercial pilot, instrument-rated.
Major US carriers won't usually even talk to you until you have an ATP.
The young guys flying the little commuter airlines usually have a commercial instrument ticket and are building up their hours and experience so they can eventually earn an ATP and move to the majors.

My working theory is that the co-pilot was despondent over Netanyahu’s reelection.
I think Lubitz was gamer and wanted to experience crashing a plane into a mountain. The fatal flaw in this plan was to explain the experience you have to survive the crash, which, most gamers do.
Not necessarily. I heard the FB page was down for quite awhile and then came back up.
So during that gap of time, if someone was scrubbing/cleaning/whitewashing it by deleting EVERYTHING and then re-posting just the parts they felt were "appropriate," then you don't know for sure which of the date/time-stamps reflect actions by the owner himself.
Could have been an acquaintance of his who knew/guessed his FB p/w.
If FB censors themselves did anything to it, perhaps it would be at the request of AL's FB Friends who saw their faces/names on there and asked FB to remove those. But that doesn't seem very likely.
FYI: Although the publicly-viewable FB page shows no Friends list, you can make educated guesses as to at least SOME of a FBers Friends by seeing who responds to their postings, or who hits the Like button on any of their photos.
