Well, I would have finished my first AR15 build, but.....

I was tightening the barrel nut onto my upper receiver, and I got 'er up to 30 foot pounds.
Loosened it up and tightened again, wash, rinse, repeat...
During the final tightening, the nut lugs would not line up with the gas system.
Tighter...
And, tighter.....
And, TIGHTER.........
And....

I started snapping the teeth off of my barrel nut!

I have to go to the gun shop tomorrow morning and get a couple more barrel nuts, and start all over again.
I'm so sad!

It's made up of a Spikes Tactical lower receiver, a Noveske upper, a Faxon Firearms AR-15 5.56 18" stainless barrel with a mid-length gas system, and a few MagPul parts for the handguard and adjustable stock.

I'm tempted to polish that stainless barrel to a mirror finish like I did with the slide on my Springfield XDm .45. But, I just want to finish this build so I can see if it shoots good.

Ugh. I’ve heard of this happening - sometimes from a lack of moly lube, sometimes just evil spirits. I guess I’ve been lucky. Sounds like a nice build. A BTT for somebody who knows more than I do about it (and that’s going to be a lot of FReepers!)

Prayers going up that you can finish your build this weekend.

It was my own fault.
I went from thirty foot pounds to sixty, then to eighty.
From the multiple YouTube videos I’ve watched, that seemed to be the way to do it.

But...

I was mis-reading my torque wrench.

Yep. I’m a moron!
(At least I didn’t ruin my barrel)

Thanks, FRiend.
(Notice that I didn’t put this post up in the middle of the day so the millions of FReepers could laugh at me)
I’m just sitting here, drunk, wishing that there was a 24-hour gun shop near my house.

(Perhaps we could get the BATF to look into that option)

Hey RKBA is a God-given right. So, I don't see the request as frivolous at all.

As for the rest, you know the old joke: Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms should be the name of a convenience store, not a Federal agency.

Here's a Bushmill's Black to you. Good luck!

I miss that old man.

I’ve done it often.
I’m on my third Wife.
But, this one’s a keeper.
We were a, “Thing,” back in 1983-84.
And, she’s the first who has shared my love of firearms and politics.
For Christmas two years ago, I got her a concealed carry class.
And for her Birthday in 2013, I got her a Springfield XDs .45.

Armed women are HAWT!

(We need a bigger holster drawer, though)

I took mine to the smith after doing the cryonization. Some smiths don't charge for flash suppressor and barrel install.

My usual smith is out for some reason, and their shop is closed.
I know what I did wrong, though (I need to learn how to read my torque wrench). And hope to finish the build tomorrow afternoon (Well, THIS afternoon) when I get the new barrel nuts from the OTHER shop. They open at eleven AM.

I’m sure that they’re going to laugh at me, too.

It’ll be a really pretty AR-15 build, though.
I just hope it shoots with no problem.
I built the lower receiver at my computer desk in my pajamas over the course of a lazy afternoon -and launched ZERO detent pins or springs into outer freakin’ space.

The guy at the OTHER shop gave me massive kudos for that feat, too.

I dunno...
The ARAK barrels slide into a key and are locked in with six hex screws.
I’ve been hearing nothing but praise for those ARAK rifles.
Faxon Firearms are a big bunch of geniuses.

World War 2 Veterans are hard to come by these days.
I met one at a pro-troop rally in Fort Collins, Colorado about 12 years ago (2003).
One of the most don’t-give-a-damn awesome piles of MAN I’ve ever met.
Nothing but love and respect for that guy.

I hope he’s doing well.

Barrel wrenches are not all made equal. Some have a much more secure lock on the barrel nut grooves. I do not like the pin types.

I screwed up big time on a .308 build with a Troy wrench by using it backwards so the thing sprung open. The wrench had clear markings which way rotation should go, but the olde master mechanic don't pay no attention......

Good thing that gun was lost in a kayak spill.................

Yeah, when you tell them you busted a nut on your new gun, they’re going to laugh for sure.

In my life Ive been fortunate to know a few...and for the most part...they have shared stories with me knowing my grandpa was kia in Germany on 27Feb1945 and I was always curious to learn how things were.
Im a member of American Legion post 216 in Austell, ga. Until last year we had two b17 pilots...both of whom had their planes shot out from under their asses. One wrote a book about his time and flew a restored b17 at airshows with Jack Rousch.
