India has numerous deities. Most people do not know that it was the British Empire that wiped out Thuggee in India.
Calling these criminals “thugs” is proper American usage, but the original Thugs were far better organized and vicious. They viewed killing others as a sport and a sacrament, and they had elaborate procedures to allow them to get away with it. They may easily have murdered a million people over the years in India. Your wikipedia source has it right.

Of course, any term used to describe them automatically becomes “racist.”
“Thug” is in no way a racist term. When I visualize a generic thug, the image in my mind is white. In particular, it is the two white union thugs who threatened me 40 years ago. My crime was (legally) choosing not to join their union. The choice they offered was two broken arms or quitting my job immediately. I turned around, went back to work to quit my job as directed, and I have hated and despised unions and their thugs ever since.
Blacks are allowed to be thugs too, and as the black mayor of Baltimore, and the black Community-Organizer-in-Chief have noted, there are a whole lot of blacks in Baltimore who have made that choice. However, I’d guess most of us have met more white thugs than black thugs. Only a racist would believe that blacks are a majority of thugs.
