My Firefox is running very very slow compared to Explorer running FreeRepublic. Any ideas?

Firefox has become a drag.

Try Opera v29. Small, fast and reliable.

Clear the browser cache. Then install AdBlock Plus to prevent the loading of ads on web sites that can slow your system down.

Good call. Adblock Plus has been a real blessing. Stops a lot of BS.

Also disable any plugins or addons you aren’t using. Some of these can suck the life out of firefox.

Yeah, some of those addons can really drag a browser down.

Update to latest version of Firefox. Also, run SuperAntiSpyware or MalwareBytes to clear out other junk running on your computer.

carriage_hill recommended Opera and I would recommend Pale Moon. Either one can quickly installed and tested, and then removed if you don’t like them. I found Pale Moon attractive to me needs because it is a FF clone.

Probably clear out the history and temp files using disk clean up and go from there.

Is your desktop cluttered with folders full of stuff? Move those to your C: hard drive and you should notice a difference.

I use PaleMoon and never going back to FF or Chrome. Stable, fast, not bloatware like FF and uses same addons as FF. Private Window feature is great.

Pale Moon is an Open Source, Firefox-based web browser available for Microsoft Windows, Android and Linux (with other operating systems in development), focusing on efficiency and ease of use.

All browsers can get this way the longer you use them. As others have said, first turn off or remove as many add-ons (Extensions) as you can. A malicious one could have snuck its way in there.

Then look over your installed search engines (Options —> Search) and get rid of everything except Google, Yahoo, and Bing.

Clearing browser cache can’t hurt either. Those 3 steps should solve most browser issues.

Firefox can be a memory hog, I found this restart button is quick and painless, when it gets logy just hit the button. Pages you want to keep can be pinned and will reopen no prob. Worth a try...

Pale Moon is also very good. I have it installed and use it too. Either browser will import your FF bookmarks etc in, and you’re good to go.

Often the culprit is the evil program Adobe Flash, which borders on a virus in my opinion. Apart from the eternal Flash crash, a lot of sites now are running adware videos in the background which utilize Adobe Flash. Our IT guys says these ads can eat up all your capacity and then your system freezes and crashes.
