As a gay atheist, I want to see the church oppose same-sex marriage
The Spectator ^ | 5-27-15 | Matthew Parris

Posted on 05/30/2015 1:13:28 PM PDT by ReformationFan

Is there nobody of any intellectual stature left in our English church, or the Roman church, to frame the argument against same-sex marriage?

I see. So now we have the result of the Irish referendum on gay marriage, and now we’ve heard the Roman Catholic Church’s chastened response, we shall have to rewrite Exodus 32, which (you may remember) reports Moses’ (and God’s) furious reaction to the nude dancing and heretical worship of Moloch in the form of a golden calf: the Sin of the Calf in the Hebrew literature. Moses had come down from Mount Sinai bringing God’s commandments written on two tablets of stone.

‘And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses’ anger waxed hot…

‘And he took the calf which they had made, and burnt it in the fire, and ground it to powder, and strawed it upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it.’

Let me have a crack at the revised version right away:

‘And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the Irish referendum’s huge majority for gay marriage, and the dancing: and Moses’ alarm was palpable…

‘And he took a copy of the Pink Paper and, flourishing it, said, “We have to stop and have a reality check, not move into denial of the realities.

‘”I appreciate how these naked revellers feel on this day. That they feel this is something that is enriching the way they live. I think it is a social revolution.

‘”We need to find a new language to connect with a whole generation of young people,” the prophet concluded; then, casting off his garments, Moses said, “Hey, lead me to the coolest gay bar in the camp.”’

Don’t laugh. With a couple of adjustments for updated circumstances, I am quoting the Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Diarmuid Martin, almost verbatim. The archbishop was responding last Sunday to Irish people’s endorsement of gay marriage by a margin of almost two to one.

Even as a (gay) atheist, I wince to see the philosophical mess that religious conservatives are making of their case. Is there nobody of any intellectual stature left in our English church, or the Roman church, to frame the argument against Christianity’s slide into just going with the flow of social and cultural change? Time was — even in my time — when there were quiet, understated, sometimes quite severe men of the cloth, often wearing bifocal spectacles, who could show us moral relativists a decent fight in that eternal debate. Now there’s only the emotional witness of the ranting evangelicals, most of them pretty dim. How I miss the fine minds of bishops like Joseph Butler, who remarked drily to John Wesley: ‘Sir, the pretending to extraordinary revelations, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, is an horrid thing, a very horrid thing.’

So, wearily and with a reluctance born of not even supporting the argument’s conclusion, let me restate the conservative Catholic’s only proper response to news such as that from Dublin last weekend. It is that 62 per cent in a referendum does not cause a sin in the eyes of God to cease to be a sin.

Can’t these Christians see that the moral basis of their faith cannot be sought in the pollsters’ arithmetic? What has the Irish referendum shown us? It is that a majority of people in the Republic of Ireland in 2015 do not agree with their church’s centuries-old doctrine that sexual relationships between two people of the same gender are a sin. Fine: we cannot doubt that finding. But can a preponderance of public opinion reverse the polarity between virtue and vice? Would it have occurred for a moment to Moses (let alone God) that he’d better defer to Moloch-worship because that’s what most of the Israelites wanted to do?

It must surely be implicit in the claim of any of the world’s great religions that on questions of morality, a majority may be wrong; but this should be vividly evident to Christians in particular: they need only consider the fate of their Messiah, and the persecution of adherents to the Early Church. ‘Blessed are ye when men shall revile you and persecute you,’ says Paul. What does the Archbishop of Dublin now have to say to the 743,300 people who voted to uphold what their priests taught them was God’s will? These, and not the gays, are now the reviled ones. Popular revulsion cannot make them wrong.

But maybe I’m the fool, the one who’s missing something. Maybe there’s a deeper truth behind Dr Martin’s willingness to bend to prevailing mood, a flexibility that echoes Pope Francis’s openness to change. Could it be that the reason for both men’s apparent lack of embarrassment at these convenient shifts is that on some half-conscious level neither ever really believed that morality was absolute or objective anyway — or supposed we really thought they were serious?

Have some of us, in short, made the mistake of taking the church at its word? Was it always, anyway, about going with the flow? Was it always secretly about imposing the morals of the majority on the minority — so all that is necessary is to discover which way the preponderance falls?

In which case, when we run out of male celibates we shall adjust a previously absolute doctrine to a more relaxed view of priestly duty. When we run short of male priests altogether (celibate or not) we shall review the teaching on women priests. When we run short of parishioners on their first marriage, we’ll think again about divorce. And when we find we cannot stop heterosexuals using contraceptives or homosexuals coupling, God’s will on these wickednesses will be found to have been revised.

Abortion next, I suppose. Here, too, shall I live to hear the divine ahem? Silly me. And there I was thinking they meant it. As so often in my life, I have missed the big celestial wink.

I still don’t get why they don’t try other alternatives. I can understand that someone might be attracted to the opposite gender, but why commit a specific behavior when there are clearly alternatives that are workable, and even less hazardous than the sewer.

I knew what you meant, lol, I am no stranger to typos!

We must read the scriptures from God’s perspective and not mans.

What would tribulation be to God, people dying outside of Christ lost or those in Christ being killed for their faith and glory for all eternity with Christ ahead of them? Clearly the former and not the latter.

The end times are to be marked by apostasy and deception. Matthew 24 is the clearest description of what is happening, there Jesus returns after the tribulation.
The Church has endured 2,000 years of physical persecution, some severe, some mild, but always there. What is different is the mass apostasy that has occurred the last 50 years and the Church no longer proclaiming Jesus as the way, the truth and the life. It is stunning and surely must mean Jesus stands at the door........

The reason marriage is insisted upon by the homosexual movement is because the devil seeks to create an alternative society in which he is followed, even if thru proxy pseudo-savior servants*, and in which are his counterfeit corrupted versions of what God created, from inducing men to worship/ultimately live/trust in created things versus the creator, to sexually joining together what God has placed asunder.

Civil partnerships would be enough if that is only what was hetros were provided, but sodomite activist seek equal and actually superior rights.

The issue for this nation is whether it will follow the general implicit basis for its moral laws or the ever-morphing morality of unanchored secularism.

Separation of church and state cannot mean the latter can have no religious basis for its laws or preferences to a religion, as behind the laws of every state is a belief system. While sharing many commonalities with other religions, the laws of America also generally reflect the Christian heritage of the Founders overall and the character of America. And from English law and ecclesiastical law.

And which Founders and judicial system acknowledged the superintendence of a Creator, and reliance thereupon, which presupposes a source of revelation from Him, both general (nature) and special (written).

In a Constitutional Republic laws are to be consistent and not violate the Constitution, interpretation of which requires one to understand the intent of the Founders, and their basis, and thus what their judgment would be in present cases (which surely would not consider porn to be protected speech, much less homosexual unions to be sanctioned).

The laws and upholding therefore are also reflective of the overall character of the people, since they elect, directly or indirectly, the interpreters of the Constitution.

Which means that as the overall character of “we the people” changes, so also can historical laws, as judges turn the Constitution into an elastic document, and impose their mind upon the Founders.

*Proxy servants gain power either by force or by infecting the people with the devil;s victim-entitlement mentality, in which souls see themselves as victims by not having the same benefits of those who obtained them by the merit of their character and actions, and also reject that they should be punished for the lack thereof. Which is basically what the devil conveyed in Gn. 3, after the original “occupy movement” and “share the wealth” campaign of Isaiah 14 went South).

And which destroys the concept of mercy and grace, as equal benefits are made to be a right, regardless of character and actions.

The proxy servants therefore present themselves as the saviors of the “oppressed,” promising them the benefits denied them due to indolence, illicit actions or lack of endurance. Which benefits are presented as a right, and at the expense of those who obeyed Biblical principals of rewards, not as the expense of these pseudo-saviors.

Instead, the intent of these “saviors” individually and as a class, is the obtaining and security of their own power and prestige and pleasures, and the effect of their “wealth redistribution” is equal impoverishment, and increasing dependance upon them without any real gain, thus ensuring their seat, with increasingly harsh rule and oppression. Far worse than any oppression and injustice their electors experienced under the capitalist system.

In Scripture, God needs nothing, and provides man with both good things and good and holy laws. But under which man deserves only punishment, yet mercy and grace is provided at the Creators expense and credit, which God enables and motivates men to respond to.

However, under grace the Creator also rewards those who respond to His mercy and grace by obedience, which is actually due to His working. And thus while the devil sought to “climb up some other way” in self-exaltation and was cast down, those who humble themselves as the sinners they are, and respond to God’s grace with the obedience of faith are rewarded, even to sitting with the Lord in His throne, “even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.” (Revelation 3:21) Even though God is the author of their ability and motivation, and the only thing he truly merits of his own accord is damnation.

No kidding.

Sounds like there could be hope for him actually.

He needs our prayers in that case.

As a gay atheist, I want to see the church oppose same-sex marriage

BAM!

There it is!

Genesis 13:13
Now the men of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the LORD.

Genesis 18:20-21
20. Then the LORD said, "The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and
their sin so grievous
21. that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know."

Genesis 19:4-7
4. Before they had gone to bed, all the men
from every part of the city of Sodom--both young and old--surrounded the house.
5. They called to Lot, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them
."
6. Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him
7. and said, "No, my friends. Don't do this wicked thing.

Psalms 12:8 The wicked freely strut about when what is vile is honored among men.

Doonesbury Cartoon for Feb/08/2013

Isaiah 3:9 The look on their faces testifies against them; they parade their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! They have brought disaster upon themselves.

2 Peter 2:13b Their idea of pleasure is to carouse in broad daylight. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their pleasures while they feast with you.

Ezekiel 16:49-50
49. "`Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy.
50. They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen.

2 Peter 2

1. But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them--bringing swift destruction on themselves.
2. Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute.
3. In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.
4. For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment;
5. if he did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others;
6. if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly;
7. and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the filthy lives of lawless men
8. (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)--
9. if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials and to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment, while continuing their punishment.
10. This is especially true of those who follow the corrupt desire of the sinful nature and despise authority. Bold and arrogant, these men are not afraid to slander celestial beings;
11. yet even angels, although they are stronger and more powerful, do not bring slanderous accusations against such beings in the presence of the Lord.
12. But these men blaspheme in matters they do not understand. They are like brute beasts, creatures of instinct, born only to be caught and destroyed, and like beasts they too will perish.
13. They will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done.
Their idea of pleasure is to carouse in broad daylight. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their pleasures while they feast with you.

But there IS hope!!!

1 Corinthians 6:9-11

9. Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived:
Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders
10. nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
11. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

If you could NOT change, you would be in most pitiful shape...

Yup. Then it wouldn't be sodomy. It would still be odd but not a sin (against God or nature).

It is odd that a person would be attracted sexually to the same sex. It also defies “nature” because sex is designed by God (or nature, if you god is nature) for procreation. No way will two people of the same sex be able to procreate (as much as they pretend). Never. So there is definitely something wrong. Maybe it is some cruel joke.

My theory is that attraction is formed much like imprinting happens to a baby chick. Some event when a child is young triggers the brain. Much like a baby chick imprinting on an animal that is not of its own species, which is odd, humans imprint sexually.

It is interesting too that lesbians seem to hate the males in their lives for example, their fathers.

Too bad, it is taboo to discuss this openly for fear of being labeled a homophobe.
