The case for why Baltimore should pay murderous residents not to kill
The Washington Post's Inspired Life Blog ^ | June 1, 2015 | Terrence McCoy

It was early Thursday morning, and news of another killing had just arrived, this one more chilling than the others. There were two bodies. One was a young woman, aged 31. The other was her 7-year-old son. Both had been shot in the head. It wasn’t long before police and onlookers swarmed the West Baltimore street to bear witness to another grim annotation in the city’s skyrocketing murder toll.

“The screams I’m hearing right now as the bodies are removed from the house would rip your heart out,” one reporter wrote on Twitter.

Even in Baltimore, where killing is a distinct part of its urban reality, the weeks since Freddie Gray’s controversial death have been exceptionally grisly. To mark May’s passage was to count bullets and bodies. Around 10 people were shot dead the second week of the month, the most in a week in more than two years. Then it happened again the next week. And again the week after that. In all, 43 people were killed in May — the most in a single month in four decades.

“We see violence as a public health problem,” Baltimore City Health Commissioner Leana Wen said. “It’s something that’s contagious, that spreads from person to person, perpetrators to victims. This sounds negative, but just like if this is a disease, there’s a way to treat and prevent it.”(continued)

Anyone else here old enough to remember when this was a respected, if liberal, newspaper?

At what point are all these government payments simply considered blackmail money?

No ... I first read it in the 1980s. It was a foul, morally reprobate, communist rag. The "Washington City Paper" was far worse, but that just proves that the comPost hadn't yet hit bottom.

Because a foul, morally reprobate communist rage like the comPost can only see problems being solved by Government Almighty.

I...I just can't even....Exception 13 (segmentation fault/GPF) in KERNEL32.DLL at 0052:EDA67DA4

(In Windows 98, Exception 13 - 0Dhex was the most common error)

(recovering) Why on God's green Earth would anyone PAY criminals, of any colour? In Obama's America, crime really does pay.

I know this is besides the point, but since when is a 31-year-old considered a “young woman”?

“We’re living in extreme times that call for extreme measures,” one council member said. Some wanted canine patrols. Others wanted surveillance cameras overlooking drug hot spots.

I have a better idea.

Bring back Public Executions.

Swift sure JUSTICE.

That is what deters crime.

Stop the never ending appeals. No more than three appeals that must be completed in no more than one year.

I the criminals know that their violent lives will end in an easily imaginable time frame perhaps they may consider another way to satisfy their need for retribution.

"I promise to never smuggle another nuclear weapon." Now where do I go to get paid? How about direct deposit, that would be safer.
