Trading liberty for a false sense of security? No thanks.
Well done, Rand Paul. The faster we rid ourselves of the Patriot Act, the better The Constitution matters. Its a simple as that. If you want to live in a free and open society, you dont spend your time and effort chipping away at the bill of rights. Usually, thats the battle-cry of small government conservatives. Today, for some reason, thats changed. Today, Republicans are admonishing constitutionalists for their stubborn refusal to sacrifice liberty for a false sense of security.
Among them is my colleague, Dan Calabrese, whose column you may have read a few hours ago.
Dan knows I dont agree with him on this, so Im just going to call it like I see it. His piece features the boilerplate big government, GOP-elite response to Rand Pauls efforts regarding the Patriot Act. By arguing that Paul may have given ISIS, Al Qaeda and others a short window to run wild hes not just engaging in hyperbole. Hes essentially arguing that without the Patriot Act were all doomed.
Fortunately, the last fifteen years have offered nothing to back up that claim.

Paul is interested in ridding only one section.
True. The data is available to local police departments. Local bosses behind local politicians can bribe to get the data and use it to make plans for robbing their neighbors.
A nut and the son of a nut.
He is probably right on this one issue. Other than that I really don’t like him.
In all due respect to you 2DV, why do you refer to Rand as a ‘nut’? He’s trying to secure what’s left of our Constitution and our liberty, is he not?
I’ve read various places that in all the years the PA has been around, the authorities cannot point to one time it thwarted a terrorist attack. To my knowledge nobody has refuted that claim.
OK, so now how do we get rid of the TSA perverts?
LOL to post 4. You are 100% correct.
Has McCain EVER been right about a single issue?
Seems like Paul has him beat.
‘zackly.
Yes, I guess you are right. Paul has McCain beat. That is not saying a lot. But I suppose it is something.
Well, I thought about it some more and I suppose McCain has been right on an issue or two also. He is just so maddening in so many ways and seems to delight aligning with the democrats that I really can’t stand him. All that campaign finance reform garbage was just horrible. He has a real penchant for tyranny.
I seem to recall that our government was in involved the the 93 Trade Center bombing.
The Patriot Act should have been nuked from outer space but it looks like they will replace it with the USA Freedom Act. Not a perfect bill but better than we had. Regaining lost freedom is hard to do.
Thank You Rand Paul for fighting hard to restore our constitutional rights.
McCain is a psycho, as are a great many members of Congress.
Term Limits would eliminate this problem.
Paul and Walker can now point to actual achievements, as can Cruz.
At the end of the day, the spooks are going to do whatever they want to, regardless of any law that Congress passes.
That was Snowdens point.
There are no consequences for the apparatchik when they violate our Constitutional rights.
Without consequences, the violations will continue.
We had some really hilarious pictures of McCain back in the CFR days. I don’t have them anymore.
Evil flourishes when . . . .
On the flip side, only the evil are doing anything now.
