Trading liberty for a false sense of security? No thanks.
Well done, Rand Paul. The faster we rid ourselves of the Patriot Act, the better The Constitution matters. Its a simple as that. If you want to live in a free and open society, you dont spend your time and effort chipping away at the bill of rights. Usually, thats the battle-cry of small government conservatives. Today, for some reason, thats changed. Today, Republicans are admonishing constitutionalists for their stubborn refusal to sacrifice liberty for a false sense of security.
Among them is my colleague, Dan Calabrese, whose column you may have read a few hours ago.
Dan knows I dont agree with him on this, so Im just going to call it like I see it. His piece features the boilerplate big government, GOP-elite response to Rand Pauls efforts regarding the Patriot Act. By arguing that Paul may have given ISIS, Al Qaeda and others a short window to run wild hes not just engaging in hyperbole. Hes essentially arguing that without the Patriot Act were all doomed.
Fortunately, the last fifteen years have offered nothing to back up that claim.

Allow me to amend my last comment.
Paul is combating the evil.
One has to wonder who these Freebers are who would trade freedom for security?
When first enacted under George W. Bush, the Patriot Act was fine, because it was directed against people of hostile interests to the security of the USA, especially members of Islamic terrorists, such as Al-Queda. However, under Barack Hussein Obama, the Patriot Act was re-directed to go after those citizens whose interests were foreign to the Democratic Party interests, or conservative/Tea Party types. Given its potential for political abuse and/or tyranny (as amply-demonstrated by the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue) the Patriot Act it is better that this flawed law is left to lapse, and it must be admitted that Senator Rand Paul has performed a patriotic service for us all.
Rand has done a great job. Very thankful for his effort.
no it was not, What bush should have done is to ban muslim immigration and keep taps on muslims, not this bs political correctness where everybody is targeted when everybody knows its only one group thats needs to be checked like this.
So you think that nothing, absolutely nothing that Ron or Rand has been trying to accomplish or trying to communicate to the people has any merit at all?
You think that because I applaud something Rand is standing up for (which, btw, is liberty - ever hear of it?), that translates into me supporting his entire world view?
Or, maybe it’s just that you don’t think. Before you type, try not to let emotion rule your brain, k?
If you want to drink the Paulestinian Kool-Aid, I’m not gonna steal your pitcher. Drink up!
You still don’t get it. And I’m not going to waste time trying to explain what should be obvious to you.
When you get your head out of your @$$, get back to me.
Thank you Senator Rand Paul!
