I know of no finer assemblage of minds and knowledge than the folks on Free Republic.
I came across this cartoon this morning:
I figured out that it's a reference to Led Zeppelin -- but being familiar with only three of the group's songs, I'm at a loss to figure out which song's lyrics are being parodied.
I'm 100% percent confident that some FReeper will know -- and probably in less than 10 minutes after I post this. Thanks!
Thanks for those links!
Post 54... you ARE into ancient history! Well done!
It is awesome. Highly recommended.
Never discount the possibility of human incompetence.
Okay, I gave up searching Zeppelin lyrics and actually read the article, 5 Famous Songs That Prove Musicians Don’t Understand Science. And I realized that the cartoon lyrics actually referred to the following:
#3. “This Kiss” by Faith Hill
The Stupid:
It’s that pivotal moment, it’s a feeling like this
It’s centrifugal motion, it’s perpetual bliss
The Science:
Did you ever ride the Gravitron when you went to the carnival? That was the ride where you stood against the walls of a circular room that spun around and around at a dizzying rate. Do you remember how your body held tight to the walls even as the room spun around you, pressed stronger and stronger as the room spun faster? Bam, centrifugal force.
What’s hilarious about these lyrics is that they’re not just wrong, but describing a force that is the opposite of what centrifugal force does: push an object outward from the center. Faith Hill is basically saying that she feels repelled from her lover.
#5. “Promise of a New Day” by Paula Abdul
The Stupid:
Eagle’s calling and it’s calling your name
Tides are turning, bringing winds of change
Paula sings of changing the world and loving one another, evoking progressive imagery such as the Earth moving under her feet, being singled out by the bird of freedom, the winds of change being churned out by the tides ...
The Science:
In fact, it’s the wind that causes the waves when it blows upon the surface of the water, not the other way around.
- You’re Welcome.
Then I re-read post 58 and realized that Lonely Bull already had it right. So thank you, Lonely Bull.
Love me like a hurricane.
That should about cover it.
Never! :-)
Yes, I think the average Zeppelin fan immediately feels familiar with it, but can’t quite put their finger on one song exactly, but that is part of what makes it funny.
See post 45, that may help out a bit.
I always heard that lyric as “it’s centripital motion.”
I had the time to view the links you sent. O.M.Gosh. The Heart version of Stairway to Heaven was absolutly mind-blowing. Even Robert Plant was in tears. And Lenny Kravitz and Kid Rock? Unbelievable. Thank you for those links. I had not watched the actual show because of the detestable David Letterman, who is not fit to wipe the ass of Jimmy Page whom he was sitting next to. It was amazing to see all the high and mighty rocking in their seats and waving their arms around.
PS
They were even better than Tenacious D.
:-)
Jeff walked off the stage while they were on tour in Germany. Jimmy formed the 'New Yardbirds' just to fulfill their already signed contracts.
Some argue that Jimmy isn't playing the guitar in this set and that the sound we're hearing is really Jeff Beck recorded.
“Love Me Tender is the only major one I know of that he claimed most of the credit for writing.”
And in that case, strictly the lyrics, because the music is actually a traditional folk song, “Aura Lee”.
Blasphemer!
LOL!
