Writing for AlterNet, Toni Nagy, who also writes for the Huffington Post and Salon, has written an article detailing her disappointment when she found out that her daughter likes the color pink and envisions herself as a princess.
Her article, titled "What's a Feminist Mom to Do With a Disney Princess-Loving Daughter?" reads, "When I was pregnant, my prevailing philosophy was that gender was a construct created by social convention, and I was convinced my child would transcend the imposed definitions of femininity or masculinity."
Ms. Nagy further "limited her screen time and tried to introduce a variety of stimuli that avoided all platforms of stereotypes." Despite her best efforts, however, her "daughter still got into everything pink, and everything princess."
She laments, "I tried. Oh god, did I try. But unless I was going to move to an intentional community and live in a geodesic dome off the grid, chances were my kid would at some point be exposed to American culture at large.
"I made a true effort to avoid indoctrinating her with conventional feminine interests, yet despite my insistence that girls could play with trucks, my daughter formed her own preferences to everything Disney Princess," she continues.
Her friends, who Nagy jokingly refers to as people "who eat only biodynamic berries harvested in the moonlight," could not escape "big business stimulus" and now "their kids are still captivated by the corporate cacophony of commercialism."
When she asked children what it meant to be a princess, they responded that it meant to be nice and to be royalty. "Even though the girls genuinely care about the emotional qualities of their heroines," Nagy argues however, "their vision is consequently manipulated by the aesthetic they are presented with."
She thus states, "The princess personality isn’t the problem as much as the beauty standard she represents."
Nagy concludes, "If we want to raise women who believe their significance extends beyond their beauty, we can’t pump little girls with the message that goodness = extravagant dresses and a perfect physique."
Just nuts.
Perhaps her daughter will turn out to be a well-adjusted woman who delights in her femininity...and will keep her daughters away from their crazy grandmother.
Children should be taken away from these vicious dykes.

So in the name of “tolerance”, the mom is intolerant of what her daughter is genuinely drawn to.... that poor little kiddo.
Child abuser. These people should be publicly called what they are.
Her problem is she doesn’t understand that she’s fighting nature, not just corporate media.
The media is awful and pernicious in its own way, but not really in this one.

These people are insane.
I’m sure there’s been more than a few arch-feminists who’ve tried to do the neutral gender thing on their children and were horrified to discover the kids had inborn traits they couldn’t get rid of.
Ofcourse, this person is clearly crazy and her validation is in her (over) education that probably took a "well on her way to crazy" person all the way to crazy.
And her daughter probably would like the toys at McDonalds as well. And if she had a son, he would probably point his finger and make “bang, bang” noises. A liberal who is terrified of reality...
Sweetie, the girls in the stories that become princesses do so because they are good.
The princesses that remain so also do so because they are good.
I used to call my youngest niece "princess" and could get her to turn off the tantrums by simply reminding her that "real princesses don't behave like that".
Of course this was built on by reminding her that as a child of God she was a real princess and should always behave as one.
We even had a list of "princess rules".
It amazes me that people like this get so flustered over what is a normal part of being a girl.
Again the progressives are freaked out to discover that boys and girls are different and that they know it at the youngest of ages. It’s just natural but they rail against creation because it’s not “their” creation.
If the kid digs pink princess stuff then get her a lot of it I say.
Why do liberals have to make life so hard?
I do understand about the unrealistic standard of beauty though. I guess the hardest position in life is to be an ugly girl...an ugly boy is just not as bad somehow... look at all the dawg-ugly guys who are successful in business, the movies..etc how many really ugly females do you see in those fields?
It’s also hard for a female to be really pretty and to depend on that for her self-worth... then someday she gets up, and suddenly she’s old, and it’s gone! It’s like being dumped off on the side of the road with nowhere to go. More realistic standards of beauty might make it easier... but then how do you get people to believe in that?
Sometimes life is just hard.
