Trump Praises His Sister, a Pro-Abortion Extremist Judge by Ramesh Ponnuru August 27, 2015

Donald Trump told Mark Halperin yesterday that his sister, a federal judge, would be a “phenomenal” Supreme Court justice. He also said that “we will have to rule that out now, at least.” If he ever becomes president, let’s hope he rules it out permanently. Maryanne Trump Barry came up in my book The Party of Death for writing one of those heated judicial decisions in favor of giving constitutional protection to partial-birth abortion.

She called a New Jersey law against it a “desperate attempt” to undermine Roe v. Wade. It was, she wrote, “based on semantic machinations, irrational line-drawing, and an obvious attempt to inflame public opinion instead of logic or medical evidence.” It made no difference where the fetus was when it “expired.”

So: The right of abortionists to make a child “expire” by partially extracting her from the womb, sticking scissors in the back of her head, vacuuming out her brain, and crushing her skull to complete her extraction, is right there in the Constitution. But let’s please not have any “semantic machinations.

Very carefully. Trump is fun to watch, and I love his anti PC stance, but he is no conservative. People like his style ( so do I) but are overlooking the fact that he has scant conservative credentials and, from his numerous flip flops, apparently no core beliefs. They are reading into him their own conservative beliefs and pretending they are his.

People also did this with Obama.

I’m not voting for Trump.

People here despised Huckabee in the past. He was great in the debate maybe a great VP. Right now I’d take Huckabee, Trump, Cruz. He’s third only because the other two have more media savvy and more world experience to date.

In watching Cruz my reaction was he will make a great president in 4-8 years.

But I would gladly take Cruz now.

Trump isn’t a conservative. I’m voting for him, because he’s a principled patriot.

Trump is NOT a Conservative. The so called “hatchet jobs” are merely Conservatives presenting evidence of this obvious truth.

I agree 100%, for all of the other NRO articles I've seen about Trump. He's no conservative, and there's no reason a conservative publication should be expected to support him.

This article, though, is a "hatchet job." There's no reason to criticize him for saying nice things about his sister. And to do so risks your credibility when you criticize him for the (many) legitimate reasons.

Good pic of Hillary Sanger Clinton. It looks like she just came from a baby dissection at the Planned, Pre-Meditated, Progressive, noParenthood, Taxpayer Forced-to-Fund, Profit Abortuary.

Headline is a little misleading.

"The other panelists were Judge Leonard I. Garth and Judge Samuel A. Alito, who wrote a separate but concurring opinion. Judge Alito said he favored finding the New Jersey law unconstitutional, stressing that any limits on abortion must have an exception for the preservation of the health of the mother."

I doubt anyone would consider Alito Pro-Abortion.

Read part of he opinion the other day. What she was saying was the argument given was not consistent with the previous ruling. It was more of a technical decision than a moral nr ethical opinion

IMO This is a hit piece.

Look, saying nice things about a family member is one thing.

Saying you “think they’d make a great SCOTUS Justice” given their judicial opinions?

Once again this comes back to integrity and trust. Nobody has the foggiest idea where Trump stands on anything when he says everything.

I would normally agree about a praise for a family member, but when a Presidential candidate says someone would be a “phenomenal Supreme Court justice” I think it is relevant, family member or not.

Oh no, Trump’s sister is a liberal!

No pure conservative has any of those liberal relatives in their families!
Ask Dick Cheney!

Definitely makes him unfit to be president of the U.S.

I would generally agree about saying that about a judge, but Trump would obviously never nominate his sister to the Supreme Court (again, she's way too old, she's his sister, and in any event, he's not going to be President anyway). So, given that, I view it as a pretty inconsequential statement that was meant to be nice about his sister...

It doesn't sound as if his sister is any more liberal than Alito since they concurred in the decision.

It was a bad law - had already been struck down by one court as unconstitutional, mirrored a Nebraska law that was struck down by the USSC the month before.
